Editor, New York Times

In George Bush's State of the Union address (January 28, 2003) he stated that Iraq has "over 25,000 liters of anthrax", "more than 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin", "as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent" and "upwards of 30,000 munitions capable of delivering chemical agents." Now that these accusations are apparently groundless, citizens are left with two possible conclusions: There has been an intelligence failure of unprecedented magnitude or the American people have been subjected to a lie of epic proportions. Either conclusion is, of course, depressing but for different reasons. But, as unpleasant as the implications may be, this story is the biggest of the century and the media have the responsibility to pursue this story every morning and night until the truth is revealed. It is times like this — and stories like this — that test a newspaper's integrity and courage.
