**WEDS JULY 23, 7 pm, at Seattle Central Community College, Room 4144, Pine and Broadway, Capitol Hill, Seattle; ISRAELI APARTHEID: Al-Nakba and 60 Years of Palestinian Resistance. While Israeli and American officials celebrate the 60th anniversary of Israel's founding this year, the Palestinian people mourn al-Nakba - the catastrophe. In order to make way for a Jewish-only state, thousands of Palestinians were massacred and over 750,000 forcibly expelled from their homes, never given the right to return. Unfortunately the catastrophe of Israeli apartheid continues to this day. Since the democratic election of Hamas, Israel has subjected Palestinians to collective punishment - escalating military attacks, expanding illegal settlements and turning the occupied territories into giant prison camps, cut off from vital food and medical necessities. Nonetheless, the Palestinians have a long history of resistance to Israeli occupation, backed by immense solidarity from ordinary people across the Middle East and the world. Just like in South Africa, a struggle can be built to bring down this brutal, undemocratic regime and fight for a state with equal rights for all. Come join us for a discussion of this history and the questions facing us today. Sponsored by the International Socialist Organization - Seattle. info 206-931-2922 or isoseattle@gmail.com

WEDS JULY 23, 7 pm, at University of Washington Kane Hall Room 120, Seattle; Dancing with Life: FINDING MEANING AND JOY IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING by Phillip Moffitt. Reflecting on his own journey from Esquire editor-in-chief to Buddhist teacher, Phillip Moffitt provides a fresh perspective on the Buddha's ancient wisdom, showing how to move from suffering to new awareness and unanticipated joy. Why do we suffer? Is there a purpose to our pain? Can we affect how much we suffer? Noting that human beings have wrestled with such questions for thousands of years, Phillip Moffitt has found answers for his own life in Buddhist philosophy. In this deeply spiritual book that is sure to become a Buddhist classic, he explores the twelve insights that underlie the Buddha's core teaching-the Four Noble Truths - and uses these often neglected insights to guide readers to more meaningful lives. **JULY 25 - 31, 7:15 & 9:15 pm plus Sat & Sun at 4:30 pm and PANEL DISCUSSION After Saturday Matinee [note added screenings], at Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave., Seattle; Operation Filmmaker (92 min, Nina Davenport, 2007, USA, Digi-Beta). Soon after the fall of Baghdad in 2003, a young and charismatic film student, Muthana Mohmed, stood in the rubble of the city's film school and explained to an American television audience that his dream of becoming a film maker had been destroyed - first by Saddam Hussein, then by American bombs. This brief, fortuitous appearance on MTV changed Muthana's life forever. Watching in the United States, actor/director Liev Schreiber stopped channel surfing, utterly captivated. Feeling guilty about a war he opposed, Schreiber decided to extend to the unknown Iraqi the opportunity of a lifetime - to come to Prague to work on an American movie, Everything Is Illuminated. But getting coffee and making copies is not Mohmed's idea of learning how to direct. And that's only the beginning of the culture clash. With his home in flames, Mohmed has nowhere to go. But how long can Schreiber and his team support a young man who they will eventually have to leave? Filmmaker Nina Davenport becomes increasingly entangled in this situation and the young Iraqi's life as his visa is about to expire and the threat of returning to Baghdad looms. Operation Filmmaker, revealing on several levels, addresses the power dynamics between the American filmmaker and her Iraqi subject, unfolding as an engaging PARABLE ABOUT THE U.S. INVASION OF IRAQ. WEDS JULY 30, noon in Elliott Bay and 1 p.m. on the shore, Seattle; PEACE FLEET! MEET THE U.S. NAVY FLEET AT SEAFAIR. We demonstrate for peace at a Seattle maritime festival because the celebration of warships in our harbor helps bring about the normalcy of modern war. The fleet arrival at Seafair is a public relations and recruiting event for the U.S. Navy. Previous years have brought Trident nuclear submarines and Navy warships used to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles in the first and second Wars on Iraq and the War on Afghanistan. The fleet is displayed for four days in downtown Seattle at tremendous cost to taxpayers while crucial social services in education, health care, and transportation are being cut for lack of funds. Activists are encouraged again to meet on the water and on land on the Seattle waterfront at the same time for a nonviolent demonstration against weapons of war. LAND DEMO: Meet on the waterfront near Pier 66 by 1 pm to see vessels in Elliott Bay. Please bring banners and signs. ON THE WATER: We are inviting all with the spirit of nonviolence, a sign, and a boat to join us on July 30. Peace Boats in the past have displayed earth and peace flags, and signs stating 'No More War', 'Impeach Bush', and 'USN=WMD', and a banner stating "Danger! Navy has weapons of mass destruction." Please note that we try to have Peace Boats in Elliott Bay by noon. Time goes pretty fast while out on the water. We will know more about this as the day gets closer, such as which Navy ships are coming to Seattle. All boats should expect to be boarded by the Coast Guard. Boats must have approved audible sound devices, registration, life jackets, etc. Skippers should carry identification. It is recommended that all boats stay 500 yards away from Navy warships. It is highly advisable to obey all Coast Guard orders.
