NOVEMBER is National AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE Month

**THROUGH NOV 26, screenings 2:50, 5, 7:10, and 9:15 pm, at Landmark Varsity Theatre, 4329 University Way N.E., Seattle; Documentary Film "William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe." In William Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe, filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, the late RADICAL CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER. In the 1960s and 70s, William Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. and represented the famed 'Chicago 8' activists who protested the Vietnam War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or when the American Indian Movement stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer. To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most reviled members of society, including rapists and assassins. This powerful film not only recounts the historic causes that Kunstler fought for; it also reveals a man that even his own daughters did not always understand, a man who risked public outrage and the safety of his family so that justice could serve all. theater info 206-781-5755, film info http://www.disturbingtheuniverse.com

**SUN NOV 22, 1 - 5 pm, at Cascade People's Center, 309 Pontius Ave N, Seattle; NONVIOLENCE DIRECT ACTION/ CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE TRAINING with Trainers Erica Kay & Viv Sharples. This is a general training for anyone interested in doing nonviolent civil disobedience. Historically, nonviolence training was used extensively during the civil rights movement, in Gandhi's campaigns in India against the British, and in the struggles against nuclear technology, against U.S. policy in Central America and Southern Africa and the Middle East, for environmental justice and protection, and for the rights of farm workers, women and people with AIDS, to name a few. The purpose of training is for participants to form a common understanding of the use of nonviolence. It gives a forum to share ideas about nonviolence, oppression, fears and feelings. It allows people to meet and build solidarity with each other and provides an opportunity to form affinity groups. It is often used as preparation for action and gives people a chance to learn about an action, its tone, and legal ramifications. It helps people to decide whether or not they will participate in an action. We will use role playing and other participatory exercises to allow people to practice deescalation and centering skills, and gain insight into what to expect during an action from themselves, police, officials, and other people in the action. Open to all. Donation for trainers encouraged

The U.S. spends twice as much per person on healthcare as the average developed nation, fully one-sixth of our GDP - yet our outcomes, especially for chronic diseases, are very often worse. What makes us different? MON NOV 23, 7:30 p.m., at Town Hall Seattle, 1119 8th Avenue at Seneca Street, downstairs, enter on Seneca Street, Seattle; Town Hall presents Joel Waldfogel on RETHINKING HOLIDAY GIFTS. The holidays: seasonal cheer, family get-togethers, and presents - lots and lots of presents. But did you really love that sweater from Grandma, or the singing fish from your uncle? And how many gifts did you buy without knowing what the recipient really wanted, or needed? What if it's time to rethink the whole idea of gift-giving? Economist Joel Waldfogel believes that could be a gift in itself. The author of Scroogenomics: Why You Shouldn't Buy Presents for the Holidays, says it's time to stop the madness; by spending $85 billion each winter, making poorly informed choices, maxing out our credit cards, and leaving recipients less than satisfied, we're creating 'deadweight loss.' Instead, Waldfogel proposes gift-giving alternatives that can reclaim the original spirit of the holidays. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company.
