Return to Top of Page**THROUGH JULY 17, Your comments needed to STOP A PLANNED NEW MISSILE WHARF. Sailors call the Trident submarine "World War III in a can". Now the Navy wants to build a new "Explosives Handling Wharf" at it's Trident base at Bangor, about 20 miles upwind of Seattle. Submit comments on the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement. The Navy's Environmental Impact Statement is supposed to cover all potential environmental impacts of the proposed construction. The Navy, however, "will neither confirm nor deny" the presence of nuclear weapons at Bangor, so it claims it doesn't need to discuss their possible environmental impact. We disagree, and believe that significant public opposition can stop the proposal, especially with budget cuts being discussed at the Pentagon. The plan for a second wharf not only makes no sense economically or in terms of the President's focus on nuclear disarmament, but it also sends a dangerous message to Russia and every other nuclear power (and nuclear wannabees) that the U.S. intends to increase its reliance (and the size of the fleet) on Trident. Send your comments to nbkehweis@ssp.navy.mil or use the Navy's webform at https://ehw.nbkeis.com/Welcome.aspx, Read Peace Action's talking points at www.peaceactionofwa.org
**THROUGH JULY 2, daily at 7 & 9 pm, at Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave, Seattle; Munyurangabo, A new film by Lee Isaac Chung. Set in the AFTERMATH OF THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE, Lee Isaac Chung's impressive debut feature, Munyurangabo is the story of two young men-one a Tutsi, the other a Hutu - trying to create futures by putting their pasts behind them. For Munyurangabo, this means seeking justice for his parents, who were killed during the fighting. For his friend Sangwa, resolution might come once he's able to revisit the lands he fled so long before. But Sangwa's parents are scared of the intentions of their son's companion-after all, "Hutus and Tutsi are supposed to be enemies." Chung, a Korean-American, traveled to Rwanda with a small crew and a nine-page script outline. Working with the cast, he completed his script with their real experiences. The result is fresh, immediate and utterly authentic. $6/NWFF members, $6.50/children and seniors, $9/general. All tickets half price every Monday! info ryan@nwfilmforum.org

This exhibit, comprising nearly 100 images, including rare photographs, illustrations and historical documents from the National Archives, the Library of Congress and private collections, vividly portrays the social history and the development of the Filipino community in the United States. 'Singgalot' initially explores the experience of Filipinos as colonial subjects and nationals, and further examines their struggles to acquire full citizenship as immigrants in the United States throughout the previous century. The exhibition traces Filipino presence in North America from the first transoceanic trade missions between Manila and Acapulco in the mid-16th century to the 19th century. During this time, some Filipinos settled in the bayous of Louisiana. Subsequent images in the exhibition depict the first significant wave of Filipino immigrants who came as American 'nationals' after the United States acquired the Philippines following the Spanish-American War in 1898. info Tikka Sears, UW Southeast Asia Center, 206-543-9606

ONGOING, NO AMNESTY FOR TORTURERS. On April 16, President Obama said he would not prosecute CIA agents who engaged in torture, because President Bush's lawyers told them it was "legal." President Obama also said Attorney General Eric Holder would use taxpayer dollars to defend torturers against lawsuits by torture victims, and to pay all judgments if they lost. These decisions are intolerable and unacceptable. Torture is utterly immoral and un-American. The U.S. ratified the United Nations Convention Against Torture, which prohibits torture and requires prosecution of torturers. In 1947, the U.S. prosecuted a Japanese officer for waterboarding.
