Western Washington Fellowship of Reconciliation
|
Western Washington FOR seeks to replace violence, war, racism and economic injustice with nonviolence, equality, peace and justice. It links and strengthens FOR members and chapters throughout Western Washington in promoting activities consistent with the national FOR statement of purpose. WWFOR helps members and chapters accomplish together what we could not accomplish alone |
Vision statement of national FOR: FOR envisions a world of justice, peace, and freedom. It is a revolutionary vision of a beloved community where differences are respected, conflicts addressed nonviolently, oppressive structures dismantled, and where people live in harmony with the earth, nurtured by diverse spiritual traditions that foster compassion, solidarity, and reconciliation. |

: FOR=Fellowship of Reconciliation"Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. … It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing." (from "We Were Made for These Times" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes)
A fitting reflection as we begin a year that promises to challenge our energy and resolve for peace and justice. This "Pacific Call" includes information about some of those "adding more" people and activities.
In response to the overwhelming needs of National Guard and Reserve families, Stacy Bannerman, whose own husband was deployed to Iraq in 2004, launched a movement to create a "sanctuary" where citizen soldiers and their families can find counseling and support. She points to the alarming rise in homelessness, unemployment, divorce, substance abuse, and suicide among returning Guard and Reservists. She hopes to open a Puget Sound region center by Veterans Day. More info: www.sanctuaryvf.org
The local chapter of IVAW (Iraq Veterans Against the War) is planning an intensive Active Duty recruiting effort at Ft. Lewis in late February and a concert in Tacoma called "Soldier, You're Not Alone." In addition, they plan to send as many members as possible to Washington DC in March for a national Winter Soldier event (to shine a light on the experience of soldiers and what we need to hear). They are looking for community support to raise necessary funds and hope friends and allies will host IVAW House parties. Contact Chanan Suarez-Diaz at chananivaw@yahoo.com
For five years, people have marched, lobbied, and taken direct action to stop the war in Iraq. We continue efforts to prevent an attack on Iran. In September 2007 as Congress debated authorizing an additional $190 billion for the war, the People’s Campaign to Defund the War was initiated by the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee. It is being promoted by the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance, the Nonviolent Direct Action Working Group of United for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace, Voices for Creative Nonviolent, War Resisters League, and others. This call to civil disobedience urges joining a nationwide boycott and redirection of federal income taxes – however we can. Info: www.wartaxboycott.org or 1-800-269-7464.
"We all take part in it – if you pay your taxes, you’re taking part in this war. We all have a responsibility, as they determined after Nuremberg … to resist and refuse enabling and condoning this criminal behavior." (Lt Ehren Watada in 2006 before refusing to deploy to Iraq)
Ellen Finkelstein, WWFOR Organizer
by Tom Savage
Fight a losing battle for a second court-martial? That’s what the folks directing the Army now face with 1st Lt. Ehren Watada.
You may recall when in 2006 Lt. Watada publicly declared that the Iraq war is an illegal occupation, and refused to deploy to Iraq. He was taking seriously his officer’s oath to "…support and defend the Constitution of the United States …" and thus recognize the legal obligation of the U.S. to respect treaties and international law.
The Army responded with a court-martial that ended in February 2007 when the military judge declared a mistrial after the jury panel had received the evidence, and despite Watada’s objections. The Army decided on a second court-martial trial. Watada objected, noting that being tried twice for the same offense (double jeopardy) is prohibited by the Constitution. On November 8, U.S. District Court judge Benjamin Settle agreed and issued a preliminary injunction against a second court-martial. Judge Settle wrote, "The same Fifth Amendment protections are in place for military service members as are afforded to civilians. …
To hold otherwise would ignore the many sacrifices that American soldiers have made throughout history to protect these sacred rights." Judge Settle also wrote that Lt. Watada is likely to succeed in any legal argument to dismiss the army’s attempt for a second court-martial.
Ehren Watada’s case raises these issues:
1. The Iraq war is illegal under the Constitution..
2. Military service members have full Fifth Amendment rights, including against double jeopardy.
3. Can the military keep a service member on duty indefinitely, even as a result of incompetence by its own court-martial judge?
Vigils in support of Watada every 1st and 3rd Saturday are in Honolulu, California (6 sites), New York, and Seattle (Westlake Mall, 11 to 1).
Come and enjoy a Saturday afternoon downtown!

Network Opposing War with Iran (NOWI)
On December 1, NOWI presented journalist Reese Ehrlich, author of "The Iran Agenda: The Real Story of U.S. Policy and the Middle East Crisis", speaking on the current situation in Iran and U.S. threats of war on Iran.
Informed by visits to Iran and interviews in Washington, D.C., Ehrlich reviewed and disposed of three major claims by the Administration: that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, that Iran is providing weapons to kill Americans in Iraq, and that Iran poses an unacceptable threat to Israel.
Ehrlich spoke just three days before the White House released a National Intelligence Estimate that validated him by admitting, "We continue to assess with moderate-to-high confidence that Iran does not currently have a nuclear weapon. … Tehran’s decision to halt its nuclear weapons program suggests it is less determined to develop nuclear weapons than we have been judging since 2005."
Ehrlich noted the Reagan administration’s January 20, 1981 Algiers Accord pledge to Iran, "The United States pledges that it is and from now on will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran's internal affairs."
You can view Ehrlich’s talk from the NOWI web site www.nowi.us Click on Web Sites and then on Reese Ehrlich.
Seattle FOR is proud to participate with NOWI, a Seattle-based coalition of peace activists and Iranian-Americans that seeks to prevent unilateral, preemptive, or unprovoked use of force against Iran and works for a policy toward Iran based on cooperation and mutual respect. The first Friday of every month, a small FOR group meets at the Wesley Retirement Home in Des Moines. Lately, they’ve been talking about Iran. Marion Kline, who joined FOR in 1934, is an active member. She reports that this fall, a member of the South Enders for Peace and Justice group took Marion and two other Wesley Home residents to the bus stop in Burien where they boarded a bus and went to Seattle to participate in a peace march and demonstration. The three used rental wheel chairs in order to participate.
Currently, the group is planning for their peace fair in February at the Des Moines Methodist Church. Last year, they had about 80 people attend. They have guest speakers and information about currents issues, including capital punishment, immigration, war, nonviolence and poverty. Last year they had Rich Lang speak and heard an update on the Department of Peace.
The Wesley Home FOR members are also working on finding a central place for local peace groups to meet. Several groups, including ones in Federal Way, Kent, Burien and Des Moines would like to coordinate their efforts.
Mary Hulse, another resident of Wesley, attended the WWFOR fall retreat and shared the information she received there with the group.
Marion calls Mr. Bush’s office (202-456-1111, comments@whitehouse.gov ) every day to voice her opinion about the possibility of invading Iran. "As long as we’re quiet, the administration thinks we’re for the war," she says. "It’s a little noise, but a little noise is important."
From an email by Dana Visali from Winthrop WA
Methow Just Peace is cooking up two "events."
1. Code Pink had a December 'contest', the winner getting a free trip to DC to give the US government a piece of their mind. As of December 31 our Methow group was far in the lead nationwide, with 92 people having signed the pledge (you only had to promise not to buy war toys). Tentatively, if Methow Just Peace wins, Michelle Mondot and Rose Hughes are planning to go to DC, with Methow Just Peace helping send the second person.
2. I am returning to Iraq for a 3rd visit to that country, flying to the city of Suleimaniya, in the Kurdish portion of Iraq, on January 3. I will be doing some volunteer work for NatureIraq (www.natureiraq.com), but am primarily interested in talking to some of the many Arab refugees from the violence in the south of the country, and gaining a greater understanding of the impact of 14 years of economic sanctions followed by 5 years of war on the Iraqi people.
I will post several articles a week while in Iraq. To receive them, temporarily subscribe to our local energy/war listserve (send an email with "subscribe" as the subject to energy@yipdoggies.com or let me know that you want on the list (send "unsubscribe" to get off the list, or again let me know).
I am interested in making some presentations on the war in Iraq in the larger context of our time in history; if any of you outside of the Methow would be interested in helping to arrange a public PowerPoint presentation in February please let me know. It would be nice to get into Evergreen and UW.
