PACIFIC CALL March-April 2006
newsletter of Western Washington FELLOWSHIP OF RECONCILIATION
225 North 70th, Seattle WA 98103, 206-789-5565
Vol. XXVI, No. 2 Editor: Tom Savage plus many helping hands.
Web edition at: www.scn.org/wwfor (may include articles and links that couldn’t fit into the print version).
The Western Washington FOR (WWFOR) seeks to replace violence, war, racism and economic injustice with nonviolence, equality, peace and justice. It links and strengthens FOR members and chapters throughout Western Washington in promoting activities consistent with the national FOR statement of purpose. WWFOR helps members and chapters accomplish together what we could not accomplish alone.
Vision statement of national FOR: The Fellowship of Reconciliation envisions a world of justice, peace, and freedom. It is a revolutionary vision of a beloved community where differences are respected, conflicts addressed nonviolently, oppressive structures dismantled, and where people live in harmony with the earth, nurtured by diverse spiritual traditions that foster compassion, solidarity, and reconciliation.

Ellen FinkelsteinThe February 3 Seattle Times headline caught my attention: "Iraq war is costing $100,00 per minute." Wow, I thought. Think what WWFOR could do with just one minute. The number was accessible to me in a way that the billions and trillions aren’t. (For help with translating the numbers into things that people actually need, see article on National Priorities Project. You can use this resource for information about your community.) Making the costs of war real seems all the more urgent these days. Many Americans have the luxury of distance; the war happens far away, they think there is little impact on their daily lives.
How can we shine a light on the true costs of war? Graphically demonstrate the human costs with Arlington Northwest cemetery and other images of lives lost and forever changed. Acknowledge the impact on military families and within the community. Put a human face on the costs to people in Iraq (see Walk for Peace article). Connect choices made at the pump and on the road with the necessity to find sustainable ways to live. Highlight the cost of war both to people and dollars and connect it to what’s happening in our own communities as Fire Mountain FOR plans to do on March 18. Expand our networks and build alliances with organizations and communities who are directly impacted by the draining costs of the war. Tacoma FOR is working with Jobs with Justice, Associated Ministries, and others on a March 19 march and rally (see Cost of War Hits Home article). The event is led by the faith community and will take place in Tacoma’s historic African-American community, in a region that has many military families.
I recently re-watched the documentary video series "A Force More Powerful," about how non-violent power can overcome oppression and authoritarian rule. (Available to borrow from WWFOR video library.) During previous viewings, I’d noticed that the nonviolent campaigns depended on people feeling engaged, directly connected in a personal way. This time I was struck by how many of the struggles hinged on economics: how deeply people were impacted by something in their daily lives (for instance, the salt tax in India), how that moved them to action. And how the choice of economic boycotts (in Nashville, South Africa) and other related strategies had both direct results and ripples of change. I feel "the fierce urgency of now" (MLK). We need to think – and act – creatively, strategically. Let us re-commit to the process of peace.

We need folks who will go ahead and respond to these articles and copy to me. We need many letter submitters across the state. War Costs – Finding Out How Much
As April 17 approaches, we ask where our tax money goes. Here are two great sources for information:
1) National Priorities Project (NPP) nationalpriorities.org
Washington State taxpayers will pay:
$5.9 Billion for war and occupation of Iraq, since 2003
The same amount could have provided:
3,573,076 people with healthcare coverage, or
105,219 elementary school teachers, or
639,517 Head Start places for children, or
3,618,008 children with health care, or
32,620 affordable housing units, or
583 new elementary schools, or
1,181,409 scholarships for university students, or
104,222 music and arts teachers, or
111,310 public safety officers, or
8,070,904 homes with renewable energy, or
62,426 port container inspectors.
Source: nationalpriorities.org. Click on Tradeoffs. To find information by state, go to nationalpriorities.org/budget07. The amount allocated for war and occupation in Iraq is based on an analysis of how much Congress has allocated so far. NPP is a 501(c)(3) nonpartisan education and advocacy group. It does not support any candidate or political party.
2) War Resisters League (WRL) warresisters.org
US taxpayers will pay:
$2,251 Billion (Yes, that is 2.251 Trillion dollars)
for Fiscal Year 2007 (Oct 1, 2006 to Sep 30, 2007) federal budget total outlays of which
$1,092 Billion (49%) is military spending
$748 Billion (33%) for human resources
$281 Billion (12%) for general government
$131 Billion (6%) for physical resources
$563 Billion (26%) for current military (budgeted)
$100 Billion (4%) additional for current military (estimated, but unbudgeted. Will be as a "supplemental" appropriation)
$429 Billion (19%) for past military (related portions of national debt, and veterans’ benefits)
Source: warresisters.org Click on "WRL’s analysis of military spending for Bush’s FY 2007 U.S. Budget". Figures are from an analysis of tables in the "Analytical Perspectives" book of the Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2007. The WRL analysis is based on federal funds, which do not include trust funds such as Social Security that are raised and spent separately from income taxes. The government view of the budget includes the trust funds, giving a distorted view of how income tax dollars are spent.
The National Priorities Project publishes a state-by-state flyer "The President’s Budget". The War Resisters League publishes a flyer "Where Your Income Tax Money Really Goes". Both are superb Tax Day handouts for use on April 17 when many FOR chapters will be engaging in educational taxpayer vigils at local post offices. WWFOR will have a supply of both flyers. Call if you want some: 206-789-5565.

"Racism, Poverty, War: Iraq, Katrina – No More" MLK Day

In distance at top of the hill is the soggy Seattle FOR banner.

Despite rainy weather, thousands turned out January 16 in Seattle for morning workshops and a rally at Garfield High School, followed by a wet but awesome march to downtown and a second rally on the federal courthouse steps.

An organization that many members of FOR support in different ways is Mothers for Police Accountability (MFPA), an interracial organization that works for peace, justice, and unity, in coalition with other groups. Mothers for Police Accountability operates a 24-hour hotline (206-329-2033) and provides help with complaints about police harassment and excessive force. Rev. Harriett Walden, director and founder, has been a well-received speaker at FOR. MFPA has given us an opportunity to work more closely with them, by sharing with us their Wish List for 2006, for volunteers to head up the following:
Education Committee to help organize workshops in the Community
Fundraising Committee
Technology Committee to work on a database and newsletter
Legislative Turnout Committee.
If you are interested in any of these, leave a message at 206-329-2033. Your call will be returned. And save the date of April 8, 2006, for the Mothers' Paul Robeson Peace and Justice Awards Celebration (FOR is a previous recipient). You can also give to Mothers' work for jobs, education, and treatment: MFPA, PO Box 22886, Seattle, WA 98122.
March 19, Tacoma: Cost of War Hits Home
On Sunday, March 19, at 1:30 p.m., faith and secular communities in Tacoma will join in a rally and march to call attention to how the cost of war is hitting social programs American communities need. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s April 4, 1967, statement that "A nation that continues to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death," the Cost of War Hits Home march will converge on People’s Park Tacoma (Martin Luther King Way & S. 9th St., in Tacoma) for a rally with speakers and music.
The event is sponsored by: Fellowship of Reconciliation-Tacoma, Miles Memorial CME Church, Pax Christi Tahoma, People for Peace Justice & Healing, Sound Nonviolent Opponents of War (SNOW), South Sound Peace and Justice Center of Associated Ministries, St. Leo’s Peace & Justice Commission, Tacoma Catholic Worker, Tacoma First United Methodist Church, Tacoma Veterans for Peace #134, Washington State Jobs with Justice, United for Peace of Pierce County. It will bring together people from Pierce, King, and Thurston counties in a powerful demonstration of public concern. Info at 253-238-2292 or ufppc.org Make plans to be there!
April 22, Seattle: "Living Our Values: Local Government and the Common Good"
WWFOR Spring Assembly, in West Seattle 9am-4pm
Each year the WWFOR’s Spring Assembly brings together grassroots folks from throughout Western Washington for an uplifting day of smart organizing. While we are deeply committed to social justice and peace, we are often perplexed about how to implement our values at the grassroots level. Increasingly, activists are working through local governments with great success! Come to the 2006 WWFOR Spring Assembly to find out what has worked already and what else is possible. We can indeed create a world of social justice and peace, starting in our own grassroots communities!
The 2006 Spring Assembly will include sessions about the using political process effectively, empowering ourselves to work on racial justice, effectively opposing Wal-Mart in our communities, helping cities oppose nuclear weapons, successfully opposing excessive military recruiting in our schools, and working at the local level for sustainability. Other sessions will help us resist the war against Iraq and provide background information about Iran. State Representative Hans Dunshee will start the day with some thoughts about working effectively with government to promote our progressive values.
While some people just complain about how awful the problems are, our Spring Assemblies inspire us to generate solutions and move toward action.
Our 8th Annual Spring Assembly is on Saturday April 22 at the Fauntleroy UCC Church at 9260 California Ave SW in West Seattle. We’ll start gathering at 9:00 a.m. for registration and social time. The assembly will start at 10:00 a.m. sharp. We are keeping costs low and will ask registrants to pay approximately $15 or whatever they can. This includes lunch.
Please fill out and mail the enclosed pre-registration form now. Pre-registering by April 14 will help us plan. For more information contact the WWFOR office 206-789-5565

May 20 -- Walk for Peace and Healing
On Saturday, May 20, Sound Nonviolent Opponents of War (SNOW) will hold a "Walk for Peace and Healing" from 1 - 4 pm, at Green Lake in Seattle. This effort, co-sponsored by FOR, many other local organizations and churches, has the primary goal of raising over $50,000 to help pay medical and other expenses for an Iraqi child (or children) with war related injuries who will be brought to the Northwest for treatment.
The walk is also intended to raise awareness about the costs of war, particularly for children. Individuals who participate will be asked to solicit donations from friends, co-workers, classmates and neighbors thus providing further opportunities for dialogue and education about the costs of this war.
Working in concert with "No More Victims", an organization that has already brought injured Iraqi children to several hospitals around the country, we are also seeking to partner with a Northwest hospital that is willing to donate facilities and medical personnel in order to provide the best possible care to the greatest number of children.
More information as well as links to flyers, donation forms and information sheets is available at walkforpeaceandhealing.com. A growing list of partners and sponsors can also be found at the website.
