The Western Washington FOR (WWFOR) seeks to replace violence, war, racism and economic injustice with nonviolence, equality, peace and justice. It links and strengthens FOR members and chapters throughout Western Washington in promoting activities consistent with the national FOR statement of purpose. WWFOR helps members and chapters accomplish together what we could not accomplish alone.

Vision statement of national FOR: The Fellowship of Reconciliation envisions a world of justice, peace, and freedom. It is a revolutionary vision of a beloved community where differences are respected, conflicts addressed nonviolently, oppressive structures dismantled, and where people live in harmony with the earth, nurtured by diverse spiritual traditions that foster compassion, solidarity, and reconciliation.

Nov 8, 4-8pm WWFOR Dinner & Auction

Friends of WWFOR from near and far are invited to a fun auction on Sat. Nov 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Woodland Park Presbyterian Church, 225 North 70th at Greenwood, Seattle. This is the biggest fundraiser for WWFOR each year, and fun enough to invite your non-member friends. We start with grazing, both on snacks and on silent auction items. This is a great time for bargain hunters. The silent auction continues through a delicious dinner. Then our long-time auctioneer, Nancy Mottet-Elbert, takes over for a fast-paced, fun, and meaningful event! Hot items include home-cooked dinners, theatre tickets, massages, voice lessons, services, art items, jewelry, and much, much more!

The auction helps support WWFOR's work to promote peace in the world, to achieve racial equality, to end the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, to rid the world of nuclear weapons, to formulate a just economic policy for global trading, to end the death penalty, and much, much more. The suggested door donation is $10, which includes dinner, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. More info: call WWFOR 206-789-5565.

Message from Mike Mike Yarrow, WWFOR Co-organizer

Recently I've felt as if I'm on a rollercoaster. My spirits plunge when the UN Security Council approves a resolution supporting the illegal US occupation of Iraq with no deadline for ending it. My hopes rise when we hear that increasing numbers of Americans have deep questions about the war and occupation. This is an important time for us to continue educating our fellow citizens to more promising alternatives.

Last night Ruth and I had a delightful dinner with two of last summer's Peace Activist Trainees and Laura Raymond, the post-college daughter of an Oregon FOR family. They are developing a session for the Fall Retreat to help FOR chapters become comfortable places for young people to work for peace and justice. I really look forward to that session, as well as to the sessions on how peace people and labor union people can work together, and how FOR chapters can work with people of color on mutual concerns. I hope you can come to the Fall Retreat, Friday evening, Nov 21 and Saturday Nov 22. For registration info, call us at 206-789-5565.

Ruth and I recently traveled to new FOR chapters in Nelson, British Columbia and Colville, Washington. We were impressed by the thoughtful way the founders were forming those groups. Nelson FOR has sent many small bags of rice to Prime Minister Chr3/4 tien encouraging him to stay out of the war on Iraq. At a local food store they sang songs to invite people to sign letters.

In Colville the Pruitt-Hamms and others are carefully launching an FOR chapter in a conservative part of the state. Bruce Pruitt-Hamm organized a mock trial of Saddam Hussein by the International Criminal Court that involved local high school students, lawyers and judges. It brought the issue of international law to that community in a vivid and participative way. We are looking forward to visiting other chapters soon.

It is also very encouraging that the SNOW coalition has many neighborhood groups who remain active with educational programs, tabling, door-to-door canvassing, vigiling, collecting petitions against the Patriot Act, etc. We were heartened by Jim McDermott's response to the request for an additional $87 billion for the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that we should correct the president's errors, not fund them. Peace to you all. Mike

Mind-boggling Billions Ruth Yarrow, WWFOR Co-organizer

Do you find the BILLIONS of dollars for U.S. operations in Iraq mind-boggling? By the time you read this newsletter, Congress will have voted an additional $87 billion for the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan beyond the $138 billion the Bush Administration has already spent -- a total of $225 billion. That's about $1,500 from each of the 150 million or so taxpayers in the country!

The vast majority of this enormous figure goes to the military, not reconstruction. War profiteering takes a big slice. For example, a satellite phone available in the U.S. for $495 is listed in the Bush Administration's reconstruction package as $6000 each (data from the US Senate Democratic Policy Committee). The tragedy of this spending is not only the Iraqi, American and other lives being lost daily. It is that as well, those mindboggling billions are being torn from essential human needs to pay for ongoing war and occupation.

How could these billions be turned into a positive force? Consider Stephen Zunes' commonsense proposal in the next article. Urge that the Iraqi people, not Bush cronies and international corporations, be in control of Iraq's resources.

The UN's Role in Transition to Iraq Self-Rule - Stephen Zunes, Seattle, Oct 11 Tom Savage, Seattle

Dr. Zunes began by outlining the history of several UN Security Council resolutions on the Middle East. He noted the UN weapons inspection teams in Iraq (IAEA, UNSCOM and UMNOVIC) actually were quite effective in revealing and controlling weapons activity. He proposed the following eight-point plan for transition to Iraqi self-rule:

"1. Create a new United Nations Transitional Authority authorized by and reporting to the Security Council, that would replace the current US-led occupation of Iraq...

"2. Expand the current UN mission in Iraq to assume the following roles and responsibilities:

--The managing of the political transition process within Iraq.

--Seeking security partners for a newly authorized UN security force.

--Administering the development fund for Iraq...

"3. Accelerate the creation of an addition of the Iraqi police force and the Iraqi armed forces. Invite NATO and the Arab League and other international agencies and regional organizations and agencies to participate in the trainings and equipping program under UN authority to establish Iraqi police and armed forces as soon as possible. ...

"4. Create a UN-authorized international security force to provide military security during the buildup to the transition process. Invite NATO to provide logistic support and command experience to the UN security force. ... Confirm the current US-UK command as the UN security force for an initial three months until a substantial international force is assembled and ready for deployment. By the end of the 3-month period, the US-led command would begin to reduce its forces and the UN commander ... would take charge of the military technical forces working in conjunction with the head of the UN transitional authority. At the end of the political transition process based on a fixed timeline, all foreign military forces would be Iraqi.

"5. Adopt the Iraqi principles for a future government as approved by a meeting of nearly 100 Iraqi leaders, convened by the United States near Nasariya on April 15, as conditions to guide the UN transition process and the subsequent Iraqi government...

"6. Establish a political transition office, staffed with security and international specialists, with a fixed timeline for achieving Iraqi self-rule...

"7. Replace the current interim government council with a genuine transitional government that would have substantial authority to manage Iraqi affairs during the transition process...

"8. Place responsibility for managing the development fund for Iraq with the transitional government and the UN transitional authority, clearly specifying requirements for transparent accounting and reporting to the Security Council...

"An Iraqi government that would emerge from under a UN trusteeship would be far more credible, both inside and outside Iraq, than one set up by the US occupation, which quite literally is more likely to be seen as a puppet regime installed by a foreign army...

Dr. Zunes closed with some suggestions for activists:

"I want to conclude with a couple of general thoughts. During my activist days in college, during the 1970s, I naively believed with my activist colleagues that through a large scale and growing nonviolent action we would be able to create alternative institutions, that we would be able to rapidly transform society. That we would have an America including a foreign policy consistent with our stated goals of supporting freedom and democracy and justice. Little did I know that in 2003 I would be fighting an uphill battle simply to save the liberal ideals of my parents' generation.

"Indeed, the Bush administration and their Republican and Democratic allies in Congress are systematically undermining the international views and principles put in place by Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and others. And so, there's nothing politically radical, nothing particularly idealist about the ideas that I put across here. Indeed, I think it's very commonsense. And because of this, and because of the interdependence of these times, I think it illustrates something we are seeing more and more since the tragedy of 9-11, that there is an unprecedented convergence between those of us who traditionally looked at US foreign policy from ethical grounds, which is Human Rights and International Law, and those who have viewed US foreign policy from a narrow strategic interest and national security paradigm. Because, really, they are one and the same. They cannot be separated anymore.

"We cannot have national security unless we take these principles more seriously because our failure to abide by these principles, as I illustrated earlier, is in large part responsible for what's gotten us into trouble. The stakes, of course, have never been higher...

"And so I believe we must go beyond the liberal left and pacifist core of the peace movement to embrace ordinary Americans who believe in the American Republic, not in American Empire. Because I believe our greatest service is not in our powerful military might, or in our ability to bully other governments into acquiescing in supporting our policies, but in the American people's commitment to the values of freedom, democracy and the Rule of Law. Thank you."

Nov 21-22 WWFOR Fall Retreat at Lacey: Steps to Justice, Reaching Out

From Friday at 5:15pm to Saturday at 3pm, with peace people from around the state, songs and workshops we'll focus on engaging with youth, people of color and the labor community. We'll be guided by FOR summer interns, an experienced anti-racism trainer and an ILWU organizer. $22, or $12 for one day. More info: call WWFOR 206-789-5565.

Olympia: Nonviolence as Goal and Way Glen Anderson, Olympia

The Olympia FOR organizes a strategically useful mix of activities. Always we convey a solid commitment to nonviolence as both the goal we seek and the way to reach our goal.

"Choosing Peace: A Series for the Whole Community"  We published and distributed 4,250 copies of a newsprint schedule of many dozens of "Choosing Peace" activities in Oct-Nov in Thurston County and a thorough guide to information resources (organizations, periodicals and websites). The purpose was to provide a huge number and variety of peace-related ways to observe the season around the second anniversary of the Sep 11 attacks.

Gandhi: Our book study group included a stimulating mixture of people and completed its work successfully. Some participants want to continue meeting to read about other peace innovators. Anyone wanting to form a new group in January to meet 6 times and discuss two very readable books about Gandhi please promptly call Glen at 360-491-9093.

On Gandhi's birthday, Oct. 2, Kristen Dahle organized a well-attended birthday party for Gandhi, which included a presentation by Bernie Meyer in character as Gandhi and with a lesson in spinning of thread to make khadi cloth.

TV Programs: Our September program focused on the US's irresponsible use of uranium weapons in Iraq and elsewhere. Our October program explored the dynamics of how to stop a war. Our November program offers a hopeful antidote to the extreme competitiveness and alienation in modern American society. Under the title "We're All in This Together!" the program offers a more humane, egalitarian, socially responsible, and community-based alternative. Each program airs twice a week for an entire month for Thurston County's cable TV subscribers.

Wenatchee Valley: Democracy series Nancy Jarmin, Wenatchee

-- Informative and thought provoking videos and speakers.
-- A "safe place" where all interested persons can participate in meaningful dialogue on national and world events.
-- Exploring collaborative actions we can take to create a positive future for our community, nation and world.
Those are the basis for Wenatchee Valley FOR's six-part Fall 2003 program "American Democracy, a discussion series", with video programs and panel discussion on
-- The Meaning of Terrorism
-- Security and Civil Liberties: The U.S.A. Patriot Act
-- America's Role in the World:
Democratic Leadership or Imperial Order?"

The series opened on Sep 6 with Michael Rupert's powerful film, "The Truth and Lies of 9/11", exploring 40 years of under reported political and economic issues that prefaced the disaster of 9/11. On Sep 20, a guest panel addressed the topic: "Terrorism and U.S. Foreign Policy" and opened an evening of thoughtful and lively discussion.

In October we showed the video of Bill Moyers' NOW interview with Chuck Lewis, founder of The Center for Public Integrity, on the U.S.A. Patriot Act. Afterward. the audience formed a large circle to discuss what have we lost, what we can do about it, what we ARE going to do about it, how we can tell others and get them involved.

October's panel discussion, "Security and Civil Liberties - The U.S.A. Patriot Act", featured a librarian, an ACLU representative, an immigrant and a member of the county Sheriff's Department.

Our topic for November is "America's Role in the World - Democratic Leadership or Imperial Order?" with a video plus open discussion Nov 1, and a panel discussion Nov 15.

Chris Rader of KOHO radio in Leavenworth interviewed Nancy Jarmin before the start of the discussion series and aired the interview several times.

Wenatchee Valley FOR extended an invitation to "The Wheels of Justice Bus Tour " and we were honored to have the colorful bus and the four touring speakers with us on Oct 7. Several WVFOR members guided the tour to highly visible stops in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee. At each stop, Lorna Tychostup, a magazine editor who was in Baghdad as a photographer during the war on Iraq, displayed her photos of the Iraqi people at the side of the bus. Passers-by, with varying opinions of the attack, stopped to talk and to view them.

Under the front page heading, "Give peace bus a chance? Not in Wenatchee" the Oct 8 Wenatchee World featured a large color photograph of FOR member Pat Rasmussen and several local people looking at Lorna's Iraq photos. The reporter was with the bus when the manager of Top Food and Drug in East Wenatchee came out to say, "Take down your propaganda, get in your bus and get out!" When Wheels of Justice folks attempted to talk with her, the manager replied, "The next time I say anything, it will be to the police." Five minutes later an East Wenatchee cruiser pulled up. As the Wenatchee World reported, "The police paused to chat and hear descriptions of the photos before they drove away; the bus left soon after that."

Along a busy street the tour group again displayed Lorna's photos, talked with people and encouraged them to sit together and write letters to elected officials. That evening Lorna showed slides she'd taken in Iraq: of smiling people, of the tragic Amariyah shelter, of a book collection offered for streetside sale by its desperate owner, of bombed vehicles in a DU wasteland, of a dirty river with destroyed water purification plant. A final slide showed two pregnant women who, just days before bombs fell, laughed and talked and fed "this crazy American woman who took pictures of everything."

Tacoma: SOA Watch Major Event Nov16 Al Kammerzall

Tacoma members of FOR continued helping Pierce County People for Justice "billboarding" at special events, especially Tacoma Farmers' Market. Some of us marched on Oct 13 with Jobs With Justice and the health workers union, protesting the elimination of 29 positions in local community health centers. We co-sponsored an all-day Earth Charter on Oct 13 and co-sponsored a peace concert on Oct 16. We're working with Pierce County People for Peace and Justice and others to hold a regional rally in Tacoma on Sunday, Nov 16 at Portland Avenue Park on East 35th and Portland Avenue, in protest of the US Army's "School of the Americas" at Ft. Benning and to urge Congress to cease funding it.

West Seattle: Waging Peace Cindy Cole, West Seattle

West Seattle continues to table at the Farmers Market. On Saturdays several people leaflet in the West Seattle Junction with educational materials on peace and justice. Over the next month and a half we will be having a workshop on Tuesday nights concerning Waging Peace through Harmonious Interactions. We will be discussing and practicing centering and listening techniques. We are hosting a forum on "Your Civil Liberties and the Patriot Act" on Oct 26.

In Memoriam: Herman Will

Herman was an active FOR member throughout his 56 years of membership. He was a conscientious objector in World War II, when he spent 2-1/2 years directing a rural hospital and service project in the mountains of Puerto Rico. He worked 37 years for peace through the United Methodist Church helping the Church Center for the UN in New York City. He and his wife, Rita, led 20 overseas study tours.
