Detox refers to detoxification from an addiction. Detox acupuncture usually involves the use of acupuncture points on the external ear, or auricle. There are thousands of acupuncture points just on the ear alone. Acupuncture can help with the withdrawal from any addiction, by treating and preventing withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Acupuncture also helps smooth out moodswings which sometimes accompany withdrawal. Moodswings can tempt one to return to whatever one is addicted to. An important component to any detox plan is counseling and emotional support--though an acupuncturist may be able to help someone with these aspects of the process, it is important that a person who is detoxing get all the emotional support they need. Usually group counseling and psychotherapy are very helpful in combination with acupuncture.
Virtually any addiction can be treated with acupuncture, such as cigarettes, methamphetamine, coffee, alcohol, heroin, methadone, crack--even chocolate! Eating disorders can be treated as well. Acupuncture itself is not addictive, though many enjoy the feeling of relaxation and well-being that acupuncture can provide. Acupuncture is a part of the treatment at comprehensive drug treatment programs.
Acupuncture does not interfere with the exercising of one's free will: It will not force someone to quit a habit; one must be motivated to quit. Acupuncture can smooth the road one chooses to travel, but cannot force anyone to do anything.
