preliminary reports.

candidate paper one

Agents of ANON Faction (sometimes called "ANONyms") seek to free themselves of unnecessary beliefs and encourage new ideas and techniques. They are passionately devoted to techniques that work and to the expression and utilization of ideas that are "truest" to them at any given time. An objective of the Faction is to provide administration to these working chaosorcerers for the transfer of information and group operations in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere.

The primary contact between members and between a candidate and sponsoring agent is through the generation and distribution of "field reports". A completed report is a printed or typed summary of a specific experiment performed in explicit detail, and may also take essay form. Before engaging in Faction activities, each candidate must successfully complete a period of mutual assessment wherein he or she submits the six Preliminary Reports to a sponsoring agent.

What follows should be considered an outline of the Preliminary Reports. Personal modification or elaboration by the candidate on any of these experiments is encouraged. The purpose of these reports is to gain a wide perspective upon which to assess a candidate's adaptive strengths, skills, creativity, and dedication to covert and occult activity.

The order in which the reports are presented is arbitrary; they may be submitted in any order. Candidates are expected to provide completed reports or updates on activity to their sponsor on a bi-weekly basis and, of course, may ask the sponsoring agent whatever questions they have (including requests for suggestions) regarding these reports. There are two variants of each report presented here, and a candidate must successfully complete at least one of them from each category.

pangenic occulture
(PAN = all; GENIC = origin, source; OCCULTURE = occult culture)

  1. Magical Group infiltration and examination.
Seek out and attend the classes, rituals, seasonal festivals, etc. of a local group which practices some form of "magic". Without endangering yourself unnecessarily, seek out a group on the fringe; the most inflexible or dogmatic and least known is often the best object for study. Identify and analyze the group's structure, belief system(s), ritual techniques and tools, and the significant participants involved.

  2. Start your own Cult.
Create a unique monotheistic religion with you as Prophet of a specific deity. The report will include a detailed examination of the new religion and the elaborate story of how you came to accept your office. Post flyers in new age bookstores which introduce yourself (by a pseudonym) as a prophet of the true religion. Meet with inquirers and include their photographs in the report.

chaoshamanism

  1. Ritual.
Create a new and unique ritual for daily use and a personal "holy" talisman, relic, or fetish. The daily ritual should precede a fifteen minute to half-hour meditation on the chosen personal lifestyle of the candidate (who are you now? who do you want to be? what must change to bring about your goals?) and should provide a feeling of focused attention and relaxed concentration when performed. It should be used, consistently and with a minimum of alteration, for sixteen days. A fetish is created using modeling clay, glue and/or found objects, (whatever object that can be personalized) and is used to create "sacred space". It should be carried at all times and set prominently in the working area during performance of the above.

  2. The Dreamtime.
Begin compiling a Dream catalogue and dictionary of specific images from your remembered dreams. Dream recall, in its ultimate form, is lucid dreaming; the dreamer is semi-conscious and can 'observe' the dream objectively, without affecting it. This is therefore an unavoidable step toward active dreamworking. Practice the following:
  1. Learn to count backwards from 100 to zero as quickly as you can from zero to 100.
  2. Have someone shuffle objects on a tray and show them to you for a short time. Reassemble the objects.
  3. Shuffle a Tarot deck and remember the sequence of the first twenty after looking through them once. As you get better increase the number of cards. When you get really good reverse remember the cards after looking through them the other way.
  4. Take a magazine and memorize the pictures on each page as in exercise 3.

The report should contain the results of the exercises and at least 15 example listings (detailed images with associations) from your Dream dictionary.

revenant atavisms
It has been found useful to perform the following experiments when one is slightly hungry and a little tired.

  1. The Vampire & the Fugitive.
The assumption of predatory and victim personae in a public environment. Spend an afternoon playing each role; on one afternoon, become a predator, seeing everyone as potential prey or as dumb cattle. On another afternoon, consider everyone a possible threat, playing a fugitive for example. Note in the report any unusual feelings that arise in yourself and reactions from others.

  2. The Humanimal.
Choose an animal at random and attempt to physically become it through mimicry and costume. Find the animal in its natural environment whenever possible and photograph it and/or record the sounds it makes. "Dance" the animal for as long as you can, and stare into a mirror to note any changes in your facial expression or posture. The report will include a full description of the animal, the form in which the mimicry and costuming adopts, and whatever success attained in becoming it.

tantric anarchy

  1. Pansexuality.
For one week note all feelings of sexual arousal in yourself. Attempt to find a pattern in your libido, i.e. are you hornier in the morning or in the evening? Then, engage in some form of sexual activity that you have never tried before or feel uncomfortable with during this time and confine "traditional" or preferred coitus to times and locations that you normally do not feel sensual in.

  2. Sexual sorcery.
Create a sigil that represents an emotional desire (like "I have control over my anger," and "I will make a good impression upon X" are examples) and write a short story with yourself in the lead role, fulfilling the desire. Masturbate while reading the story to yourself (or record and playback the story). Visualize yourself acting out the scenario you've created and fantasize your desire as having already occurred. When the story is over (in your mind), hold the symbol before you as orgasm arrives. Smear sexual fluids upon the symbol and let it dry. When the desire manifests, destroy (burn) the sigil. Include the story, intent, and results in your report.

random espionage

  1. The Tail.
Decide upon a date and time that you will be able to devote a full hour to following a stranger. At the appointed time, begin following the first stranger who passes you; note all activity and map out all destinations. You will make every attempt to remain in visual contact with the target for ½ hour, but make no eye contact with the subject. Photograph them. Remember, familiarity breeds contempt; if eye contact is made, move on immediately to another subject, but not before making a guess as to why you were seen. What were you thinking when you were seen?

Also, keep in mind that it is better to lose a subject than to have them realize that they are the object of surveillance. The goal of this experiment is to gather as much information on an arbitrary target as is possible in a short period. You should be able report more information on the subject than what could be had from visual observation during The Tail.

  2. The Sensory Link.
In a relaxed and natural environment, sitting down, speak aloud what you hear, feel, see, smell, and taste. Begin walking and focus your attention on all the items of a specific color. For example, decide to see only red objects until you've run out of them then switch to another color. The object of this exercise is to bring back memories through association, so note your mental wanderings. You may come to realize that there is some relation between what you're thinking and what you're seeing. Create a poem containing any color-memory associations for the report.

poetic terrorism

  1. The Groupie.
Create a fanzine and get to know your idols. For example, you can see free shows by interviewing bands that you know nothing about; just pick up a used CD of theirs and call the record company when they play in your area, or call the publisher of a writer who's coming to town on a book signing tour. Have a business card and tape recorder handy. Transcribe the interview for the report. It is important that you find unfamiliar authors, tattooists, musicians, or other artists to interview for this experiment. Hopefully you'll ask some questions they've not been asked thousands of times!

  2. The Media Jezebel.
Create obscure, confusing, horrific, and/or perverse art forms for display in a predetermined geographic area other than where you frequent, in a completely anonymous fashion. All media must be deposited in your "target" area. The more interest and confusion your PT experiments generate, the better. Media attention about them is the goal in this experiment, and it is often easier to get "written up" in a small town which publishes it's own small paper. Include photographs and newspaper clippings of your art display.

Note: The Faction does not endorse nor discourage illegal activity on the part of its members. As an adult, you are completely responsible for your own actions.
