Volume Two: Candlemas 1992
CANDLEMAS FETISH RITE
by Frater Rook.232
Introduction
Fetish: An object believed among a primitive people to have magical
power to protect or aid its owner.
Fetish is a very broad term, and they can serve any purpose. The
purpose of the fetishes created in this ritual is to bring a specific
potential that the participants feel within their selves into active
manifestation. Writing, money making, and charismatic appeal are
examples of these potentials. In this ritual, the participants will be
making a hanging fetish that should in some way subconsciously
represent this potential. This can be done by incorporating into the
design of this hanging objects that represent the potential. Quill
pens for writing, coins for money making, or small mirror for charisma
are examples. It is suggested that the design not be planned
beforehand. Wait for inspiration to manifest. Creation will leave a
preliminary charge, but this fetish is meant to be re-charged
independently. be creative.
MATERIALS: 1 or 2 sticks, twine, various colors
and thicknesses, large beads, stones with holes, etc., interesting
vegetable matter: pods, leaves, dread flowers
THE RITUAL
This ritual has been made to fit the Candlemas theme by making it a
wedding of potential to active life. Make a fire and lay out materials
around the fire pit. All gather around.
Statement of Intent:
IT IS OUR WILL TO MAKE A FETISH THAT WILL ACT AS A RECHARGEABLE SIGIL
BY PERFORMING A MARRIAGE BETWEEN OUR DORMANT POTENTIAL AND OUR DAY TO
DAY LIFE AND MAKE THEM ONE.
All stare into the flame in the center of the circle. begin
rhythmic breathing and empty the mind, till no mind is achieved.
M.T. : MARRIAGE IS BONDING POTENTIAL AND LIFE
Everyone close their eyes. Visualize the light behind the third
eye. The light brightens as you breathe in.
M.T. : HAND IN HAND MAY IT CONTINUE BONDING LEADS TO FRUITION
Let the light cascade down your spine and fill your limbs. Feel
yourself glowing.
M.T. : COMBINING, THE TWO BECOME ONE.
All open their eyes and begin chanting.
ALL : TRUTH FAILS NOT TO MAKE DREAMS TRUE POTENTIAL NOW MARRY LIFE
[repeat]
As the participants feel the inspiration begin building the
fetish/sigil while continuing to chant.
When all is complete:
M.T. : WE WILL DREAM THAT HOPE NO MORE... WE WILL LIVE IT!!!
Laughter banishing.
AUTO-DA-FÉ PATHWORKING
by Soror Severian.427
Based on the Ritual of Auto-da-fé by Pete Carroll
(One should have a sigil prepared for this working.) Breath slowly,
deeply. Your body is relaxed, release the tension in your muscles. You
are floating.
Open your inner eyes. You are lying in a recently harvested field
of corn. As far as you can see are cut stumps of corn plants. The
strong smell of the earth fills your nostrils. You stretch in the hot
sun.
You look to your right and see a picnic basket. Reach out and open
it, feeling the muscles in your body working. Inside the basket are
loaves of bread, fresh and aromatic. The smell of the loaves makes
your mouth water. Your stomach aches in hunger. You reach in the
basket and take a loaf. Suddenly you find yourself stuffing loaf after
loaf into your mouth, eating so fast that crumbs are spilling on the
damp soil. The bread is quickly gone, but you are still very hungry.
Shaking you begin to lick the crumbs from the ground. You find
yourself eating the dirt in large mouthfuls, unable to stop even
though your stomach is too full and your body aches.
You become intensely aware of every ache and pin of your body. The
pain becomes more intense as you continue to eat the warm soil. Your
skin tingles as if tiny pins were inserted in it. Exhaustion overcomes
you, and you collapse, unable to move. The pain increases, every bone
aches, your muscles spasm. As the pain continues to increase you begin
to fall downwards.
Dirt falls over you as you sink into the earth. The sunlight is
blocked. Your ears, nose, mouth and eyes are filled with dirt as you
are pushed downward, but you barely feel them as the pain in your body
becomes intolerable. You try to scream but your lungs are filled with
dirt.
All sense of motion or gravity is gone. You are surrounded by
limitless matter. Your agonizing body is your universe. Just as you
think you will go mad with the pain from your body, it is gone. The
sigil of earth appears in your mind. You laugh for you know you are
not the body which is entombing you. Sensation is gone.
You are standing on a rock beach. The sky is overcast. The air is
cold and salty. You are laughing madly, uncontrollably dancing. You
jump from rock to rock, overcome with emotion.
You dance down onto a sandy stretch of beach. A crumpled figure
lies not far from you. You run to it feeling a sudden unease. As you
reach it, the color of its wet hair is familiar. You reach out and
turn the face upwards. You give a startled cry as you recognize the
face of your lover. You realize your lover is dead. Grief overwhelms
you, you convulse in a sob. You have never before known such sadness.
You hold the body of your lover, feeling the wet salt stiff clothing
against your skin.
After a while you get up, still crying. You walk, aimless, unable
to see, not caring. You find yourself out on a point of rock. far
below water swirls madly. The tide is coming in with huge waves. You
turn towards land and see that you are cut off by the rising water.
You are terrified. There is no way back, you know that you shall
drown. You are tense with the fear. You slip and fall down into the
water. You struggle but the current takes you out to sea. Cold salt
water f ills your mouth, you are sinking. You thrash, fear overcoming
anything else. Emotion is your universe.
As you are pulled deeper, the water becomes warmer. The sigil of
water appears in your mind. The water is body temperature and is
limitless. You laugh, for you realize that you are not the emotions in
which you are drowning.
You are in a tropical forest. You smell smoke. It is very hot. You
are walking down a game trail. You look around at the lush foliage.
Every flower, every leaf, see ms sexual to you. Desire is beginning to
fill you.
You walk into a clearing and see several naked people. each one of
them is different but perfect. They are naked and slowly dancing. Each
movement of the perfect flesh arouses you more. The smell of smoke is
stronger. One of the dancers passes you so close that naked flesh
brushed past your cheek, warm and soft. Your reach out to bring the
dancer close to you, but you grasp a burning tree.
A pit of fire leaps up between the people and you. You do not care,
desire is so strong that it fills you completely. The dancers are now
moving mockingly, making openly sexual moves, embracing one another.
You are drawn uncontrollably forward. You fall into the pit of fire,
but you have in your arms one of the perfect creatures.
Downwards you fall, but you do not care. The only thing that
matters is the body you now hold. The figure burst into flames. The
ashes slip away. The disappointment of your desire is so strong that
you howl. It aches, but the desire only increase, unbearable.
Sexuality is your universe. You are engulfed in flames, limitless
flames. The sigil of fire appears in your mind. You laugh, for you
realize that you are not the sexuality which is burning you.
You are on a mountain top, sitting on a stone ledge. Fog from
clouds surrounds you. You are disconnected from all but thought.
Before is a folder of papers and a pen. You take out the papers. A
list of questions is on the first page. You must decide the answers
and write them down. If you do not the ledge you are on will crumble.
You look at the first question, which asks you to plan the whole
rest of your life. You find that you can not concentrate. You are
thinking of the last book you read . You try to concentrate on the
question, knowing that if you don't plan carefully you shall lie a
horrible life. You can not think clearly, for you find yourself
thinking about what to do about your current finances. You are so
distracted that your head aches.
You look down to the next question, a philosophical one. You must
explain your beliefs. An hourglass has appeared along with a note
telling you that you must answer the questions before the sand is
gone. You are totally filled with other thoughts though. Your mind
races trying to organize your thoughts to write them down.
Before you can write a single word, the final grain of sand falls.
The ledge crumbles. You are falling, blown by the wind. You can not
stop trying to answer the questions. Thought is your universe. The
winds are limitless. The sigil of air appears in your mind. You laugh,
for you realize that you are not the thoughts which are blowing you.
You are in an octarine room. Before you is a large chaos star. You
move towards it, free of your body, your emotions, your sexuality, and
your thoughts. Draw your sigil in the chaos star, for you are not
bound. You laugh for it is done.
RUNES OF DESIRE
by Frater Talgarth.024
This ritual is inspired by the works by Frater Psyber-Kia (Vortrit)
and his creation of the concept of the MASS OF ODHINN (see the TEUTONIC
WATCHTOWERS by Frater Psyber-Kia).
Odin is an excellent role model of a magician and serves as a good
example of a godforce for Octarine magic. Odin , thru a process of
self-sacrifice, produced HIS Alphabet of Desire; what is now known as
the runes. The runes have been expanded (corrupted?) and are used now
as a system of divination, magic, and philosophy. It acts as a sort of
German Qabalah for its adherents. The message seemed to have gotten
lost, one must gain the "ruins" for one's self. The key is
to find one's own ruins using Odin's grasping of them as a model, not
gospel. By ritually going through the process of self-sacrifice as
Odin did we can profit and not have a profession of belief. Frater
Psyber-Kia's idea of autosexual gnosis as the key to Odin's grasping
of the runes shall be used in this ritual, whereas a Black Mirror
shall be Mimir's well from which one shall grasps the keys of
inspiration.
Before undergoing the rite one should have a sigil prepared for
charging; its basic intent is to gain knowledge of ones own Alphabet
of Desire. The ritual is designed to be done for nine nights, the
first eight nights the magician stops at step 5 and does a GPR. On the
ninth night the magician continues on to the Mirror working
(alternatively, the entire rite could be condensed in one nights
working) and the charged sigil is attached on behind the mirror. One
then gazes into the mirror and divines one's "Runes of
Desire" using one of two methods. The two methods that can be
used to record this information are the free form and the structured.
The first is where the magician divines the sigils that come to him
and later fixes them to some sort of matrix organization of the
desires [such as in Peter Carroll's Liber-Null in the chapter on
"Alphabet of Desire"]. The second involves having pre-made
sheets with the sigil of the desire n them and the three states of
salt, sulfur and mercury also. One will gaze down at the sheet then
into the mirror and write down what comes to them for each state and
then move on to the next sheet. Any system of organization of desires
can work and be adapted.
THE RITE
1. GPR
2. "IT IS OUR WILL TO CHARGE THIS SIGIL"
3. INVOCATION OF ODIN:
English Translation: I know that I hung in the wind torn tree Nine
whole nights, spear-pierced, Consecrated to Odin, myself to myself
Above in the tree, Whose root no one knows whence it sprang None
brought me bread, none served me drink; I searched the depths, spied
runes of wisdom; Raised them with song, and fell once more thence.
Listian Version: IS KANO THADATA IS HAGUN ISNOT THEDE ISNOTTHORN
TARITEH NOTINEH HAGO THLAEH NOTIS HAGTASIG, SIGEHOS EHIS RITCA EH,
KAOTHSIG EHKA OSTIR TIOTHIL OS, MANSIG TIROTH MANSIG OSTHI LEH ISNOT

OTHFA ISOTH MAN; RITO SIGEH THOREH MAN ISTHOR SIGOTH NOT, OSNOT FAEH
LAOTH NO TIKA EHMAN RITEH THOREH KAEH
4. Next charge the pre-made sigil through auto sexual means while
visualizing one's self as Odin hanging on Yggdrasil. At climax the
sigil is anointed and placed in the back of the Black Mirror if this
is the night of gazing; otherwise, set the sigil aside for later and
move onto a GPR.
5. If this is the night of gazing, look into your mirror and seek
your "Runes of Desire" and transcribe them however you would
choose to, then finish up with a GPR.
THE UTCHA RITE
This is an Egyptian Evocation rite for bringing progress, movement,
luck and money to the operators. The rite uses the energy of the
planets Jupiter and Mercury, corresponding to aspects of the gods Heru
(Horus) and Tehuti (Thoth) of the Egyptian pantheon. During the rite,
the energy of Jupiter and Mercury is evoked into edible
representations of the heart and brain. These may be made of any
edible substance; cookies, for instance. To the ancient Egyptians, the
heart represented the true will and progress, while the brain was
thought to embody the concept of Maat (truth) and represented the
actions of movement and intelligence. In ancient times, the heart and
brain of the deceased were eaten in an attempt to gain the
aforementioned qualities of their previous owners. In this rite you
are eating your own heart and brain, which have had the power of
Mercury/Tehuti and Jupiter/Heru evoked into them.
THE RITE:
1. Consecration of the working space.
2. Statement of Intent: "It is our will to bring progress,
luck, movement and money to our selves."
3. Everyone spins around in circles in the midst of strobe light
and/or psycho music in order to gain gnosis in an excitatory manner.
During this, the operators will be visualizing the violent removal of
their present heart and brain. It is suggested that the heart be felt
as torn bleeding from your body and dangling painfully from the chest
cavity. The brain should be felt as exploding outward from the skull.
4. When suitable gnosis is obtained, those operators who are still
in working condition will promptly collapse at will. The operators
then bring their new edible heart and brain before them. At this time
the operators may state to themselves what their particular goals are
(if they have specific goals in mind).
5. The 1st M.O. begins the Egyptian Evocation of Jupiter and
Mercury, Heru and Tehuti. Operators will envision Heru as entering the
heart and Tehuti as entering the brain. Heru can be visualized as a
strong, conquering, golden hawk-headed being, very sure and strong of
will. Tehuti can be visualized as a benign ibis-headed being who
embodies truth and intelligence.
EVOCATION
Tep ra-a tu (my mouth speaks) Sah-a ses (my legs walk) Qeb-t-a sa
(my arms protect) Pa qer au-t shash (the sky is open) Geb shash
mer-t-a (Geb opens my eyes) Anpu ses men-t-a (Anpu strengthens my
thighs) Sakhmet tun ua (Sekhmet stretches me) Nuk kher ba (I have
power) An ha-t-a (in my heart) An qeb-t-a (in my arms) An sah-a (in my
legs) N ari-ab-a (to do my will)
6. The 2nd M.O. begins the second part of the evocation, which the
other operators take part in. All parts written in capital english are
said by all and will be prompted by the 1st M.O.
2ND EVOCATION
Sper Tehuti ah Heru (come forth Thoth and Horus) Set Sebakau ah
Heru-up-shet (Mercury and Jupiter)
COME FORTH TEHUTI AND HERU MERCURY AND JUPITER

money) N Heru-up-shet (of Jupiter)
COME FORTH TEHUTI AND HERU MERCURY AND JUPITER
Tehuti n at tuan n utt apen (Tehuti we evoke into these brains) Er

progress) N Set Sebakau (of Mercury)
COME FORTH TEHUTI AND HERU MERCURY AND JUPITER (this part continues
as a chant until participants are ready for part 7.)
7. Everyone eats the charged hearts and brains.
8. Spastic laughter.
SOME LIBER MMM IDEAS
By Frater Talgarth.024 & Soror Cyllan.771
Liber MMM is one of the fundamental books of the Pact. Within it
the reader gets their first glance at the practical workings of the
I.O.T. These exercises are sometimes rushed over and progressed
through as quickly as possible to get on with latter books and to do
some "real magic".
In E.P.I.C. Temple we devote a good portion of our Temple time
doing these exercises. Some of our experiments have led us to such
things as "intently listening' or "sound concentration"
exercises. In this we lie in a comfortable position and just listen to
sounds, trying not to form the regular interpretations, but creating a
free floating association with the perceived sounds. one gets the
strange results of hearing the refrigerator sound like a flock of
geese. A variation on this concept of "sound concentration"
would be to choose a particular sound, or combination of sounds, to
distract the psychic censor. In this, one would devote all of their
attention to that particular sound alone, shutting all else out, until
it becomes almost (or literally) deafening. One could even chose
something as mundane as mind expanding, pre-recorded music.
Other Temples have experimented with the various different
sensations of taste while the participants are blindfolded. One could
also do experiments with the concept of active touch while
blindfolded. Most of us have done the standard staring at an object
until it blurs and the primordial flux of information causes us to
lose our visual reference.
If Buddhist theory of consciousness is to be looked at, thought
itself is a type of sense. one can take a concept in their mind and
let a ll their thoughts flow into and relate to that chosen concept.
Though much Liber MMM work is based strongly on the pursuit of no
mind, "thought concentration" has a tendency to move one
toward the opposite - all mind. All the thoughts coalesce into a
single pinpoint, leading through a sort of intentional insanity to
eventual no mind. Overloading the brain inevitably leads to this
state. Also, one may just let their thoughts arise and flow through
the body without attaching any feeling or judgmen t to them.
The practical side of these techniques is the realization of the
active role of our sense in the creation of our perceived realities.
This interaction is an active role and not passive. Liber MMM gives us
the knowledge of how to start on re-programming our brains. We are
working on a collection of Liber MMM exercises and ask that you send
your various ideas t us. We plan to collect and then distribute them
to everyone.
WINTER SOLSTICE PHOENIX REVEL
by Sorors Cyllan & Severian
The purpose of this rite is to destroy old patterns, desires
emotions, personalities, and/or whatevers in order to use their energy
for the creation of something new (as in patterns, desires, emotions,
personalities, and/or whatevers).
Traditionally in the Celtic Winter Solstice the "old
king" (representing the old year) joins with the "new
king" (representing the new year) at death. In this rite
Mesopotamian gods are used instead of kings.
The god Anu, god of the sky, is used to represent the past.
Uninterested in mankind, he left the earth to the rule of his son
Enlil. Enlil, god of storms, creator of mankind, and ruler of the
earth is used to represent the future. Enlil took rule of the earth
from his father and constantly created changes for mankind.
The rite requires paper, pens, a bowl, a pocket fire elemental, and
a Phoenix. The Phoenix which is used in this rite may be made of any
chosen material which is malleable but will eventually become set. Air
drying clay is an excellent example. One may attempt to make an actual
Phoenix-looking thing if one is artistically inclined, but it is not
overly important that the Phoenix necessarily look like a bird. It is
important that everyone participating takes part in molding the
Phoenix with the ashes, even though the task may create interesting
color combinations on the hands.
The rite is performed as follows:
1. The space is consecrated.
2. Each person will think of a symbol to represent everything they
want to be rid of and a name for the symbol. This symbol is then drawn
onto paper. The paper is placed in a centrally located bowl.
3. Everyone begins to circumambulate around the bowl
counterclockwise with one hand stretched toward it chanting the mantra
NUG DACARTH (a statement for the purpose of bringing forth the god
Anu). The 1st M.O. will state the evocation of Anu during this.
4. The 1st M.O. lights fire to the symbols. Everyone should stop
saying the mantra at this point.
5. While the symbols are burning, each person will vocalize the
name of their symbol toward the bowl, putting all of the energy of the
old into the symbols, until the flames have died down.
6. Everyone begins to circumambulate around the Phoenix clockwise,
hand outstretched, chanting the mantra DIN CHOG (a statement for the
purpose of bringing forth the god Enlil). The 2nd M.O. states the
evocation of Enlil during this.
7. The ashes are placed in the Phoenix by the 2nd M.O. The mantra
stops. Everyone begins to mold the Phoenix.
8. After the ashes are thoroughly combined with the clay, each
person takes a part of the Phoenix (be fair now, kids!). This is
molded into a personal symbol to represent the new. While molding,
each person will vocalize a name chosen to represent the new symbol.
9. Banishing laughter and party to bring in the new year.
10. Take your symbol home and keep it as a pet.
EVOCATIONS
Anu: ANU, GOD OF THE SKIES WHO FORGETS US AND WHO, LIKE OUR PAST,
WE FORGET. ANU, LORD OF THE OLD YEAR, WE COMMAND YOU! TAKE INTEREST!
WE EVOKE YOU INTO THESE SYMBOLS OF THE PAST!
Enlil: ENLIL, GOD OF STORMS, TAKE THE EARTH AS YOUR DOMAIN! TAKE OF
THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE. BRING US THE NEW YEAR AND WITH IT THE CHANGES
WE CREATE! WE EVOKE YOU INTO THIS PHOENIX, THIS SYMBOL OF THE FUTURE!
CHAOISM & CHAOS MAGIC A Personal View by Peter J. Carroll
As there are as many Chaos Magicians as there are Chaoists
practising magic, I cannot speak for the subject in general but only
for my own Chaoism and Chaos Magic.
However, if you want a one-line definition with which most Chaoists
would probably not disagree, then I offer the following. Chaoists
usually accept the meta-belief that belief is a tool for achieving
effects; it is not an end in itself.
It is easy to see how other people and cultures are the victims of
their own beliefs. The horrors of Islam and the ghastly state of
politics in sub-Saharan Africa, are obvious examples, but we rarely
pause to consider the extent to which we are the victims of our own
beliefs, and the ability we have to modify them if we wish.
It is perhaps worth considering the recent history of belief in
Western cultures before mounting an attack on the very foundations of
the contemporary world view. For about a millennia and a half the
existence of "God" was an incontrovertible fact of life in
Christendom. It was never questioned or thought to be questionable.
Hideous wars and persecutions were conducted to support one
interpretation of deity against another. Learned men wrote thousands
of books of theology debating points which seem utterly tedious and
idiotic to us now, but the central question of the existence of
"God" was never considered. Yet now, the belief in
"God" as the author of most of what goes on in the world has
been almost completely abandoned, and belief in even the existence of
an absentee "God" is in most places fading. Satanism as an
anti-religious gesture is now a waste of iconoclastic talent. The
alchemists, sorcerers and scientists of the late Middle Ages and the
Renaissance won a stupendous posthumous victory. Their questioning of
the medieval world view started a rot that brought the whole edifice
down eventually.
We can laugh looking back on it now, but I assert that we now live
under a collective obsession which is even more powerful and will
appear equally limiting and ridiculous to future historians.
Since the eighteenth century European enlightenment, a belief has
grown to the point where it is now so all-pervasive, and so
fundamental a part of the Western world view, that one is generally
considered mad if one questions it. This is a belief that has proved
so powerful and useful that virtually everyone in the Western world
accept it without question. Even those who try to maintain a belief in
"God" tend to place more actual faith in this new belief for
most practical purposes.
I am about to reveal what this fundamental contemporary belief is.
Most of you will think it is so obvious a fact that it can, hardly be
called a belief. That, however, is a measure of its extraordinary
power over us. Most of you will think me a madman or a fool to even
question it. Few of you will be able to imagine what it would be like
not to believe it, or that it would be possible to replace it with
something else. Here it is: the dominant belief in all Western
Cultures is that this universe runs on material causality and is thus
comprehensible to reason. Virtually everyone also maintains a
secondary belief that contradicts this - the belief that they have
something called free will, although they are unable to specify what
this is - but I will deal with that later.
We spend billions every year indoctrinating our young with the
primary belief in material causality in our schools. Our language, our
logic, and most of our machines, are built largely upon this belief.
We regard it as more reliable than "God".
Now, it has been one of the functions of the Magician to try and
break through to something beyond the normal. My own magical quest has
always had a strongly antinomian and iconoclastic element, and I long
ago decided to go for broke and attack the primary beliefs of our
culture. Religion is too easy a target as it is already fatally
disabled by our ancestors, the Renaissance sorcerers and scientists.
Contemporary Satanists are wasting their efforts. Ideology is
thankfully being gradually replaced with economics. The main thrust of
my Chaoism is against the doctrine of material causality and
secondarily against most of the nonsense that passes for modern
psychology.
Anyway, now I have to firstly try and convince you that there is
something seriously wrong with material causality, and that there is
something that could supersede it as a belief. These are vitally
important questions for magicians, for since the demise of essentially
spiritual descriptions of magic, the belief in material causality has
been increasingly used in a haphazard fashion to form various
ill-conceived metaphors such as "magical energy" or
"magical force" which are tacitly presumed to be something
analogous to static electricity or radio waves. This is, I think,
complete bullshit. Magic can sometimes be induced to behave a bit like
this, but it is not a very effective description.
Before attempting a frontal assault on material causality I shall
backtrack a little to gather ammunition. Few people noticed that in
the 1930`s a serious crack was discovered in the fabric of material
causality which, on the grounds of faith alone, was supposed to cover
everything. This crack was called Quantum Physics, and it was
pre-eminently Niels Bohr who, with his Copenhagen Interpretation,
poked a finger into the crack and prised open a wrap to reveal a
different reality.
Basically Bohr showed that this reality is better modelled by a
description of non-material causality operating probabilistically not
deterministically. This may sound tame at first, but the implications
for our everyday view of the world and for our theories of magic are
awesome. It brought to an end the era of the clockwork universe
paradigm which began over two hundred years ago and which almost
everyone still believes in their guts, even if they cannot formulate
it precisely. I urge magicians everywhere to give thanks by drinking
what is probably the best lager in the world, for it was the Carlsberg
Brewery in Copenhagen that supported Bohr and his colleagues while
they did the physics.
The majority of straight scientists find quantum physics as
distasteful as a priest would find witch-craft. If they have to use it
they prefer not to think about the implications. Even Einstein, who
started quantum physics going but made his major contribution in
Relativity, felt repelled by its implications, on ground of scientific
faith and residual Judaic belief, and wasted much of his later life
campaigning fruitlessly against it.
Quantum physics says to me that not only is magic possible in a
world that is infinitely Chaotic than we thought, but that magic is
central to the functioning of this universe. This is a magical
universe not a clockwork one. Causal materialist beliefs were a
liberating and refreshing breath of fresh air after a millennia and a
half of monotheism, but now, at their zenith, they have become
tyranny. Relativity and the fundamental physics associated with it are
probably close to a final refinement of the causal materialist
paradigm, and as such they now seem a terrible prison. For all
practical purposes they confine us to this planet forever and rule out
magic from our lives. Quantum physics, which I believe currently to be
basically an investigation of the magical phenomena underlying the
reality most people have perceived as non-magical for the last two
hundred years, shows us a way out.
It may be some time before any significant portion of humanity
learns to believe the new paradigm in their guts and live accordingly,
but eventually they will. Until then it is bound to sound like
discombobulating gobbledgegook or tarted-up intellectualism to most
people.
I would like to mention my other favorite iconoclasm in passing
without explanation. I reject the conventional view of
post-monotheistic Western psychology that we are individual unitary
beings possessing free will. I prefer the description that we are
colonial beings composed of multiple personalities; although generally
unafflicted with the selective amnesia which is the hallmark of this
otherwise omnipresent condition. And that secondly there is no such
thing as free will; although we have the capacity to act randomly, or
perhaps one should say more precisely stochastically, and the
propensity to identify with whatever we find ourselves doing as a
result.
All the gods and goddesses are within us and non-materially about
us as well, in the form of non-local information.
I consider that all events occur basically by magic; the apparent
causality investigated by classical science is merely the more
statistically reliable end of a spectrum whose other end is complete
Chaos. However, I would like to end with a few words about how my
Chaoism affects my personal activity in what is ordinarily called
magic.
There are for me two main aspects of magic; the parapsychological
and the psychological. In enchantment and divination I believe that
the magician is attempting to interact with nature via non-material
causality. He is basically exchanging information with his environment
without using his physical faculties. Austin Osman Spare precisely
identified the mental maneuvers necessary to allow this to occur. The
maneuvers are startlingly simple and once you have understood them you
can invent an unlimited number of spells and forms of divination. The
maneuvers are sacred but the forms of their expression are arbitrary;
you can use anything at random.
Bohr and Spare are for me Saints of the Church of Chaos.
I consider that when a magician interacts with those apparently
sentient sources of knowledge, inspiration and parapsychological
ability that used to be called spirits, gods, demons and elementals,
he is tapping into the extraordinary resources that each of us already
contains. When activated they may also receive some input via
non-material causality from outside. Yet since we all contain such a
rich multitude within our own unconscious or subconscious and can also
receive congruent information from the collective unconsciousness as
it were, then the possibilities are practically limitless. Given the
correct technique one can invoke or evoke anything, even things which
did not exist before one thought of calling them. This may sound like
complete Chaos, and I have to report that my own researches confirm
that it is!
