Sandell House

9011 Lake Washington Boulevard NE

This Craftsmen-derivative house, built in 1928, is one of the few remaining structures from this era on Lake Washington Boulevard that has retained much of the original character. The house was built by Andy Sandell, who ran the ferry.

In 1937, it was purchased by Harry and Olga Boston, who built the garage and boathouse. They eventually subdivided the property and built another house between the original house and the lake.

The Sandell House relates to the study unit theme of architecture, and it reflects the Craftsmen influence that was common in homes of this period. It is unusual in its detailing and elaborate roof structure. It was also selected for inclusion in the survey because of its overall integrity. It is representative of the types of houses that were constructed along Lake Washington during the late 1920s and 1930s. It contrasts with the larger, modern homes in this area of Bellevue and nearby Medina.
