Long ago, in 1965, my parents started folk dancing and forced my siblings and myself to go along with them on many occasions. The dancing was held in Enumclaw, a small town close to Mt. Rainier. The group was listed as an international group but had strong Germanic overtones. It was on New Year's Eve 1970 that I got fed up with being left at home to babysit my younger sister and some other children while the rest of the family was out partying. I decided that I wasn't going to spend another New Year's Eve child wrangling, so I started going dancing with my parents at the next opportunity.
Dancing came easily and was fun to do. I did my first dance performance that year with my father as my partner. It was a German performance. My interest in dancing flourished from that point. I joined other nearby folkdance groups and was a semi-regular participant at more distant groups. I continued performing under the guise of many different nationalities including French, Hungarian, and Mexican. I "was Danish" at the first NW Folklife Festival.
After many years of dancing recreationally, rehearsing, and performing, I grew weary of it and dropped back to dancing recreationally one time per week. In 2002, I noticed that I was planning my week according to the TV guide. This thought bugged me. I knew there had to be more to life than this. I was acquainted with some people in Enzian Schuhplattler and asked about the group. I received an invitation to check it out; so I did and here I am.
I continue doing international dancing on Thursdays along with attending rehearsals and performances with Enzian on a weekly basis.
