Our own WAE Co-President Amy Gerson showed a video she made about Asian textiles, including a map of Asia, pictures from art & textile books, and textiles from her collection.  We passed around Amy's books & textiles, and textiles brought by members.

Traditional Indonesian Textiles

The cover shows an exquisite ikat, and inside you can find a photo of two Indonesian girls wearing skirts & tops decorated with beads & shells.

Structure and Surface : Contemporary Japanese Textiles

The cover of this book is made of fabric, crinkled and printed, purple on yellow.  It includes a recent Issey Miyake coat with chiffon needle-punched onto the surface of colorful heavy woal.  Also check out a pleated origami scarf. Don't miss the shibori piece that looks like a sea anemone.

Changing Lives of Refugee Hmong Women

The author of this book, Nancy Donnelly, spoke at the September 1998 PNNAG General Meeting.  The cover shows a mother & son with intricate cross-stitched hats.  Inside you can find batiks, pleated skirts, etc.  The Hmong live mostly in Cambodia.

Beyond the Tanabata Bridge : Traditional Textiles of Japan

This is a catalog of a Seattle Art Museum exhibit.  The most popular item was a gorgeous yellow silk kimono, hand painted with swallows and butterflies.

Empires Beyond the Great Wall : The Heritage of Genghis Khan

This is a catalog of an exhibit at the Provincial Museum in Victoria.  It shows a gold damask robe with a full skirt, from the 13th or 14th century.
