Study of Sulky® SolvyTM with Heidi Lund

Supply List
  • Sewing machine that allows free motion (i.e. feed dogs can be dropped or covered)
  • Embroidery hoop that fits under your needle (even the plastic spring-loaded ones work great), or try it without a hoop
  • Open-toed darning foot, regular darning foot,  or quilting foot, etc.
  • Decorative threads like Sulky® rayon, metallic, even cottons or polyester if you like
  • Scraps of Tulle, Organdy, Cotton, Rayon or even Lame’ backed with fusible interfacing to fit in your hoop
  • Plastic container to hold water for dissolving SolvyTM

    How to Make Tulle Shapes Using Sulky® SolvyTM

    1.  Drop or cover feed dogs.
    2.  Install open-toed darning foot (preferred), regular darning foot, or quilting foot.
    3.  Thread machine with any desired thread & bobbin, such as embroidery thread.
    4.  Optional:  sketch design on SolvyTM with an ultra-fine Sharpie.
    5.  Place outer/bottom hoop on work surface.
    6.  Place a layer of SolvyTM over hoop.
    7.  Place one or two layers of tulle, netting, organdy, lame', etc. over SolvyTMButterflies above used two layers.
    9.  Place top/inner hoop over all and press down into bottom/outer hoop.
    10. Stitch desired shapes.  Butterflies above were closely zig-zag stitched over a sketched design.

    Candy taped a business card over the feed dogs.
    11. Trim away excess SolvyTM and tulle (save the scraps in an air-tight ziploc to dissolve in water as a paint-on stabilizer for another project).
    12. Soak in water for approxmately 10 minutes.
    13. Rinse gently, allow to dry.

    How to Secure Snippets Using Sulky® SolvyTM

    1.  Drop or cover feed dogs.
    2.  Install open-toed darning foot (preferred), regular darning foot, or quilting foot.
    3.  Thread machine with any desired thread & bobbin, such as embroidery thread.
    4.  Place outer/bottom hoop on work surface.
    5a.  If not using foundation (as for the sample at right, above), place a layer of SolvyTM over hoop.
    5b.  If using foundation layer (as for the sample at left, above), place the foundation layer over SolvyTM .
    6.  Place snippets on foundation layer (if used) or directly on bottom layer of SolvyTM.

    7.  Place a layer of SolvyTM on top.
    8.  Place top/inner hoop over all and press down into bottom/outer hoop.
    9. Free-motion stipple.

    10. Go back over stippling with more free-motion stitching.
