Heidi won the Grand Prize - Professional Division for the 2004 Sulky Challenge for her 27" x 30" wall hanging entitled "Encrusted Blueberry's".

Created July 2004.

In 1996, just a few years after I started to learn to quilt, I purchased an inspirational book called “The Art of Annemieke Mein”. Though my three dimensional blueberries are purely fictional they are inspired by Annemieke Mein’s attention to detail.

Quilt is completed with the Artist’s own hand dyed pima cotton, which was stabilized with KK2000 and Totally Stable. It features hours of free motion embroidery, dupioni silk blueberries, eyelash fibers, hand dyed cotton yarn and iridescent cord. The vast leaves are created with Sulky thread, organdy, dupioni silk and tulle. There is over 9000 yards of Sulky threads used in this piece and it’s embellished with satin ribbon, and many, many beads, that were applied by hand.

Blueberry Chrysalis

Heidi's small format art quilt "Blueberry Chrysalis" has been selected out of 28 finalists to appear in the 2005 Quilting Arts Calendar. She does not know which month, yet.

"The quilt started out to be moth cocoons (chrysalis), but when I got the slides back and looked at them on my lightbox.... they looked like blueberries!"

Frosted Moth Chrysalis
January, 2004

Completed in January 2004 as part of a color crayon challenge for my local Kitsap Quilt Guild.  I drew the color "white" out of a sealed box and challenge myself to make an all white quilt.  It is 14.5"x15.5" and is made from white Kona cotton, freeform machine quilted to a cotton batting and a wool batting.  The cocoon's are made from silk dupioni and are embellished with fuzzy fibers and decorative thread.  I have used braids, silk and satin ribbon, leaves have been made of thread and organdy as well as dupioni and the entire quilt is embellished with several hundred beads.

This quilt is the first place winner for the Kitsap Quilter's Challenge and is owned by Carol Roi Olsen of Bainbridge Island.  It is currently on tour at a couple of juried shows.  It has been inspired by the very first book that I purchased at a PNNAG general meeting annual book sale:  "The Art of Annemieke Mein".

My Underwater Dreams II

After "My Underwater Dreams I" was published in Quilting Arts 2004 calendar and subsequently sold, I had to create a number II in the series.

Inspired by all the time I have spent under the ocean, this small quilt is a macro view underwater.  It is currently touring in the 2003-2004 Small Wonders exhibit sponsored by Quilt's Inc.  The quilt background has been crinkled and has hours of free-motion quilting.  It is embellished with hand embroidery, fuzzy fibers, silk dupioni kelp fronds, 3-D thread seaweed and sponges, precious stones, shells, buttons, charms, beads and sequins.

Treasures of an Enchanted Forest

This was created for the 2003-2004 Bernina Fashion Show "Fantasy" and is now touring Internationally.

Fabrics for the coat have been scrunched and textured and then cut up and sewn back together.  The coat is embellished with 8 king size spools of Sulky's variegated rayon thread, Krienik braids, buttons, sequins, beads, crystals and over 800 3-dimensional leaves.  Leaves are created from hand carded wool and mohair, sparkle organdy, metallic taffeta, silk and cotton with fiber etch.  Scraps from the coat were used to create the hat.  The short, off the shoulder, Lucia velvet shift dress is hand dyed by Heidi and the necklace and bracelet are created with hundreds of beads and crystals.

This coat, velvet dress, hat, necklace and bracelet have 418 hours involved to create them.

Vest
"My Golden Garden"
2001 Hoffman Challenge Garment

The 2001 Hoffman challenge fabric was # 6091 Antique Black/Gold. It's the black and gold Butterfly Print. Very eastern inspired and quite luxurious. The vest used is a tunic style Butterick pattern with side slits. This vest was strip pieced and machine quilted to muslin with stippling. Before assembling the vest I added chenille and metallic fibers for vines, leaves of cotton fabrics, prismatic foil and ultra suede. Over 100 flowers made from coordinating fabrics then layered with charms, buttons, beads and wonderful things!
