In the Beginning

   Early Settlers:

   Aaron Mercer  Aaron Mercer

Aaron and Ann Mercer settled on Mercer Slough in 1862. He built a cabin along the Slough which would later bear his name. A land claim was filed in 1869. Their fifth child, Eliza Ann, was born at their cabin on Mercer Slough on December 14, 1863.

  
   Clark Sturtevant  Clark Sturtevant

Clark M. Sturtevant, Civil War veteran, paddled up Mercer Slough in 1873 and selected a site near NE 8th and 116th Ave. NE which included a small lake that was named after him, and later renamed Lake Bellevue.

   
   William Meydenbauer  William Meydenbauer

Rowed across Lake Washington from Seattle in 1869 and staked out an 80 acre claim in Meydenbauer Bay.

   
   Albert Burrows  Albert Burrows

He was a carpenter who had fought several battles of the Civil War. Entitled to a soldier's homestead, he settled on the eastern shore of Lake Washington what is now the Killarney area of South Bellevue. He built the first school in the area.
