Shiach/Bechtel House
1 Diamond S. Ranch
This house is named for David James Shiach, who built it, and for Mrs. I.
K. Bechtel, who bought it from Shiach. David Shiach and his brother, William, operated a logging company and logging camp near Lake Sammamish. In 1889, he purchased the Peter Buckley homestead near the present intersection of NE 24th Street and Bellevue Way.
For the next ten years, he and his wife lived in a shake house that was on the property. In about 1900, he and his wife built a new dwelling. They sold this house and 40 acres to Mrs.
I. K. Bechtel, the mother of Ike Bechtel, who eventually sold the property to Louis Schafer to
develop Diamond S Ranch.
The Shiach/Bechtel House relates to the study unit theme of architecture/landscape architecture. It is significant as an early pioneer home in the Bellevue area, even though it has been substantially remodeled over the years.
