Seattle School Districtıs Illegal Military RecruitingThe Citizens' Campaign for Commercial-Free Schools has found the Seattle School District secretly giving student information to military recruiters in violation of federal privacy law and is scheduling a press conference to alert parents and the public.
The conference will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at 11:45 a.m. at Garfield High School, located at 400 23rd Ave. in Seattle. The conference will be held in Room 210, on the southeast corner of the second floor, near the street level entrance at 23rd and Alder Street.
Participants at the conference will include the following coalition members: the Citizens' Campaign for Commercial-Free Schools, the American Friends' Service Committee Youth Leadership Development Project, and Youth Undoing Institutional Racism, a project of the Seattle Young People's Project.
Visuals include high school students holding up military recruiting literature.
Under pressure from CCCS and Congressmember McDermottıs office, the school district has indicated they plan to mail out the required disclosures to parents within the next several weeks. Without the watchdog activities from CCCS, it's unclear when, if ever, the district would become in compliance with the law.
The Citizens' Campaign for Commercial-Free Schools is a statewide grassroots organization whose mission is to protect the right of all Washington children to a commercial-free public education.
