Policy on commercial advertising in schools

Amendments which were introduced included:

  1. Change 'prohibit' to 'discourage' advertising [Don Nielsen, failed 6-1]

  2. Change 'prohibit' to 'significantly restrict' and omit any reference to children in the policy [Barbara Peterson, passed 4-3 [Preston, Waldman, Schaad-Lamphere opposed]

  3. Replacement set of procedures which gut the whole thing [Don Nielsen, failed 6-1]

  4. During phase out of Channel One, prohibit renewal of any existing contracts [Michael Preston, failed 6-1]

  5. Takes out clause that would make distribution of flyers and brochures central in the building and voluntary [Steve Brown, passes 5-2; Preston and Waldman opposed]

  6. Permit advertising in Memorial Stadium [Peterson; motion withdrawn]

  7. Prohibits logos which identify corporate sponsors [Preston, fails 6-1]

  8. Removes logos from vending machine facades [Preston, fails 6-1]

  9. Permits announcements and logos of nonprofits such as PTA, Alliance for Education [Waldman, passes 7-0]

  10. Extends prohibition on ads on vending machines to include current Coke contract [Schaad-Lamphere, passes 7-0]

Final vote on adoption of policy and procedures: 6-1 (Nielsen opposed)
