RESOLUTION TO URGE THE SEATTLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT TO DEVELOP A POLICY ON COMMERCIALISM ON OUR CAMPUSES Whereas state funding for community colleges has decreased from approximately 80% in the 1980s to approximately 60% currently, and
Whereas because of this decrease in state funding community colleges have sought funding from other, often private sources, including advertising and promotion of commercial interests, and
Whereas using public schools as a vehicle for advertising and marketing is a misuse of public funds and public authority; and
Whereas participation in advertising to students corrupts the integrity of public schools, implies endorsement of the advertised products and may pose a conflict of interest, therefore be it
Resolved that the Seattle Community Colleges Federation of Teachers (SCCFT) urge the Seattle Community College District (SCCD) to convene a work group of students, staff, faculty and administrators to develop a policy regarding advertising and promotion of commercial products on our campuses and be it further
Resolved that the SCCFT urge the SCCD to endorse the letter from Citizens' Campaign for Commercial-Free Schools to the Board of Directors, Seattle Public Schools, calling for implementation of a policy to abolish commercialism in schools.
