"Sanctions are infanticide masquerading as policy."       - Congressman David Bonior

NATIONAL APPROACHES

If you would like to become involved in direct lobbying of Congress, contact Eric Gustafson at the Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC). Eric is a Gulf War vet who has been working diligently for several years lobbying members of Congress. Eric can be reached at EPICenter@igc.org, (202) 543-6176.

EPIC has been instrumental in the collecting of Congressional signatures on several items, particularly (check these items to see where your member of Congress lines up):

  1. A letter to President Clinton (1/31/00) expressing concern about current sanctions policy. An alphabetical list of the signatories, with phone and email.
  2. A bill (3/2/00), known as the "Humanitarian Exports Leading to Peace Act of 2000."

In order to facilitate your contacting members of Congress, the following files will be helpful. Choose the one that best fits your email program.

When you send a message to Congress, attempt to state your position in the "Subject" heading. That way it is more certain to be tallied. Also, I'd recommend putting the recipients on the "Bcc" (Blind carbon copy) line, so that all of the recipient names do not appear in the body of your message. By all means, contact your personal representative in a separate email (remove their email addresses from the lists below), and include your name and address. If you put your address in a bulk mailing, your message will often be ignored. Many members of Congress, for various reasons, will recognize only constituents. My philosophy is, however, if they are willing to take money from non-constituents, they have an obligation to listen to the views of non-constituents. Let your conscience be your guide.

  1. A full list of the senate with addresses, phone numbers, web pages, etc.
  2. A list of email addresses only, one address per line
  3. A list of email addresses only, all addresses on one line, separated by commas
  4. A full list of the house with addresses, phone numbers, web pages, etc.
  5. A list of email addresses only, one address per line
  6. A list of email addresses only, all addresses on one line, separated by commas (HOU99ONE.TXT).
