Reaching Out (to Brazil)by Dic Selin, Volunteer On a recent Sunday afternoon I headed out to show off the Seattle Affiliate's great accomplishments. I joined Brazilian guest visitor Sergio Hammes, interpreters Maria Pimentel, a SHfH volunteer and Almuht Dear-Jossy, a friend and co-worker of Rita Lindle's for lunch. Then it was "Show ands Tell" time.We drove by most of the homes constructed or remodeled by the affiliate.Sergio had many questions dealing with organization of the affiliate as well as construction materials, logistics, volunteer organization, and fundraising. We tried to find Habitat homeowners at home but families were evidently enjoying one last sunny Sunday Seattle afternoon in Fall. Our two hour drive-about was highlighted by a walk through of the four blitz builds houses with the Sunday site supervisor. In true Seattle fashion a visit to Starbuck's was the site of the requisite coffee refueling for our Brazilian visitor and the completion of the home tour. SHfH tithes fifteen percent of its undesignated donations to HfHI and through them to Brazil. In 1997, 218 homes were built in Brazil with the average cost at $3000 US. SHfH has chosen Brazil as the primary recipient of its tithe as a result of a task force report on the need for housing and the ability of the local affiliates to complete the homes. It was evident from Sergio that the need does exist and they are grateful for the support and faith of SHfH. It was certainly fulfilling to recognize the difference we make. "With the world forever at a point of crisis somewhere, it should never be forgotten that Habitat for Humanity represents an opportunity to build bridges, bring people together and set the stage for true and sincere fellowship and love. It also should never be forgotten that you, our global partners, represent the best of who we are because you earnestly and successfully reached beyond the boundaries of home" -- Millard Fuller founder and president of HfHI | ||||
