From the Board President: As you were hanging your 1999 calendar and resolving to make some changes in your life, Seattle Habitat for Humanity was posting its 1999-2003 Five Year Plan and committing to an ambitious list of goals. At the core of the Plan is a pledge to double the number of homes completed annually. This means we will soon be adding at least twenty families per year to the Habitat homeowner community. Such expansion cannot be achieved without engaging more partners. That's why we have adopted strategic goals to further develop our ties with religious congregations, other organizations and corporations, and to strengthen our relationships with other housing organizations. We recognize that such alliances may call for greater flexibility as we open ourselves to the varied gifts and goals of new partners. Our second annual "Planuary" meeting at the University Presbyterian Church on January 23rd gave us a chance to meet with many of the potential new and renewing partners who will build with us during the coming years. [see article on page 4] The networking of so many representatives of diverse groups generated dozens of new ideas and high levels of enthusiasm. Together we searched for and found ways of collaborating in our common mission. With such an abundance of generous hearts and willing hands, Habitat's greatest challenge will be to channel the energies for maximum results. We expect Habitat will be stretched in the coming five years as we do what's required to achieve the goals we have set. As our logo declares, reaching up and out to clasp the hand of another committed person is the way we put a roof over people's heads! Kathryn Kurtz |
