PLANTING A
COMMUNITY
The South Park South Site was
bustling with activity Saturday, May
22. Habitat families, volunteers, staff,
kids, dogs, and even the sunshine came
out to help plant trees, shrubs, and
flowers. Sierra Online and Home
Depot partnered together with Habitat
to help landscape the South Park
neighborhood. Sierra worked with the
Habitat homeowners donating the use
of their new software, The Complete
Land Designer 3-D, to help families
choose plants and design their yards,
while Home Depot provided the plant
materials and ground cover. Teams of
volunteers from both companies came
out Saturday and worked in the dirt
alongside the families digging,
gardening, and planting seeds of a
community.
| SPRING PLANTING AT
LEXINGTON PLACE
Last month, an energetic crew of
homeowners and volunteers spread
topsoil over the yards of the two
recently dedicated homes. The
monolith of topsoil was enough to
intimidate anyone, but our resilient
army of helpers, armed with shovels,
rakes and wheelbarrows, made short
work of it.
Habitat VISTA volunteer, Ben DeGain
was single-handedly responsible for
ensuring great weather for Habitat's
recent spring planting. Ben arrived
prepared for the worst. Expecting rain
and mud, Ben arrived with wet weather
gear just short of a diving suit,
guaranteeing sunshine. Sure enough,
the only mud encountered was created
by our enthusiastic volunteers.
Meanwhile, another crew made the
trek to Madison Park to retrieve the
plants donated through Lease Crutcher
Lewis Contracting by a client. Rose
bushes, hydrangeas, heathers, and the
occasional freeloading dandelion made
their way back to Lexington thanks to
the volunteers with big trucks. Shovels
were swinging, and dirt was flying. The
yards looked less like a construction
site with each new plant that went in
the ground.
Thanks to everyone who was there to
help and to Lease Crutcher Lewis
Contracting for the donation of the
foliage. The yards look great!
