From the President of the Board Each September hundreds of Habitat for Humanity affiliates around the world celebrate in a formal way what they are doing all year long: building on faith. They plan special events to remind themselves and their communities that faith - in God, in a provident universe, and in generous hearts - is the real foundation of all Habitat structures. Such faith fosters a willingness to trust that a goal can be realized even when key elements of the path to it are uncertain. As I write this message, Seattle Habitat for Humanity's plans for Building on Faith Week '99 lack some clarity in such details as to where the construction site will be(staff is still feverishly working to obtain building permits). Our week will begin with prayer and construction on Friday, September 10 and close with construction and a benefit concert with Mike Stern on Saturday, September 18 at University Baptist Church (concert details at right). We know that work teams, including skilled and semi-skilled leaders, will come from faith communities that mirror the breadth of confessions in our region. The schedule is already filled up. We know that at least one Habitat family will work with the volunteers to make their "down payment" of labor on their new home. We know that together they will build a community as well as a home. Most of all, we know they will experience the satisfaction of partnering with others to eliminate inadequate and indecent housing in the Northwest. Looking beyond the September event, Seattle Habitat staff and Board can see on the horizon exciting possibilities the shape of which is yet unclear. We just know that faith will lead people to amazing action.
