Hi Everyone!

Seattle Qwest Pioneers have completed some great summer projects! We’d like to share the results and thank everyone who supported these efforts!

Food Lifeline

On Saturday, August 8th, twenty enthusiastic volunteers worked for 3 hours at the Food Lifeline warehouse in Shoreline. They repackaged pears and cabbages. And it wasn’t just a few pears and cabbages. It was 5,250 pounds of pears and 41,800 pounds of cabbage. That’s 23 ½ TONS of food! That equals 36,758 meals! Follow this link to see pictures taken by Aaron Roberts Food Lifeline, August, 2009. Thank-you to everyone who volunteered for this great project!

Treehouse Back to School Drive

The end of summer means the beginning of a new school year. It can be a tough time if you are a foster child. In fact, Treehouse says “Everyone has butterflies on the first day of school. Foster kids have helicopters.” That’s why Qwest Pioneers sponsor a yearly back-to-school drive benefiting Treehouse. New backpacks and school supplies are collected and donated to foster children in our community. Despite the rocky economy, Qwest employees, friends and family stepped up and made the 2009 drive a smashing success. We collected 200 backpacks/messenger bags, and several large boxes of school supplies. In fact, we filled the Treehouse van to the brim. The folks at Treehouse were so happy with our donations. In fact, they gave us the ultimate complement when they told us they use our drive as an example to others of how to do it right! Special thank-you’s go to our site coordinators, Linda Santos in Kent, Todd Stiller at the 1st Ave garage, Jennifer & Marian at 1200 3rd Ave, Cindy Thompson at the Lenora building, and Cheryl Kerner at Bell Plaza. Heartfelt thank-you's to Qwest Women and PAAN for their generous support. And thank-you to everyone who made a donation and helped a child. You really do make a difference!

Bell Plaza Blood Drive

We beat our target of 40 donors at the September Bell Plaza Blood drive! We had 44! And since each donation helps 3 people, 132 people benefited from our efforts. The Puget Sound Blood Center counts on our drives as a steady supply of donations, so when we make our goal, it helps ensure a steady blood supply for our community. Thanks to everyone who took the time to donate. And thank-you to our blood drive coordinator, Michael Smith. The $10 Pacific Place gift cards were won by John Quickstad, Jennifer Moore, Cherry VanCour, Erika Bourbanis, and Kristin Zimmerman. The next drive is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11th.

Operation Shore Patrol – Beach Cleanup

After a short rain shower, Saturday, September 19th turned out to be a beautiful day at the beach in Ocean Shores. Nine adults and 3 kids represented Qwest Pioneers at the38th annual Operation Shore Patrol beach cleanup. We took a stroll down our assigned beach and picked up trash left behind by less enlightened human visitors. The good news is the beaches are much cleaner these days. The bad news is there is still trash to pick up! The most unusual thing we found – a car fender. The most common trash items – cigarette butts and rope. The best thing – other beach walkers thanking us for what we were doing, and the good feeling that we’d left that beach trash free. Mark your calendars for September 18, 2010 and join us for the 39th annual event!

If you have any questions about these projects, or are interested in becoming a Pioneer member, please contact Marian Wilcox at marian.wilcox@qwest.com.
