BEGINNING CLASS FOR SCN-PINE E-MAIL
 

1. INTRODUCTIONS: STAFF AND STUDENTS SCN STRUCTURE
 [5 minutes]
 
A. SCN Philosophy
1) Public highway vs. toll road.
2) Free (but we take donations)
 
B. Forums and Newsgroups, Web site, IP (Information Providers).
 
2. GENERAL INFORMATION  [5 Minutes ]
 
A. SCN time REPEATABLE limit of 45 minutes; warnings at 5, 2 & 1 minutes before cut off.  Library’s 90-min. limit is NOT repeatable.
B. E-mail addresses (e.g., ab123@scn.org)
1) You must type e-mail addresses exactly as you see them.
2) ab123 = user I.D.
3) @ = Stands for "at"
4) scn = domain or host name
5) .org = generic type or geographic indicator; some others are: .com("commercial"); .net("network"); .gov ("government"); .edu ("educational institution").
 
C. Web addresses.  Web addresses begin with  http://www., or just www.  They do not have an @ sign.  You cannot e mail to web addresses.
 
3. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
 
A. ^ = control key,  NOT
B. Return (from typewriter days) = Enter (from computer era)
C. Also, most of the time, we say “press” instead of “type” when referring to a PARTICULAR key.  (E.g. “Press a”).  Sometimes one can say “choose,” or “select” or “hit.”
D. Change "SCN User" to [your name] on the SCN Application.
 
4. STARTING SCN.  [15 Minutes]
 
A. Login Method 1.  Use this method to start up SCN on the library computers that use Windows graphical screens.
 
1) Double-click on the Telnet icon. (Or click once and hit Enter.)
2) At box, type in scn.org, then Enter.
3) At login prompt (login: ) type in user I.D. and Enter. If you make a mistake, you can backspace to erase.  Or, hit Enter twice and you will get a new prompt.
4) At password prompt (password: ) type in your password and Enter.  The letters you type will not show up on the screen so no one else can read your password from the screen.
5) Use commands at bottom of screen to move through entry page until you get to the Main Menu.
 
B. Login Method 2: Use this on VT 100 (amber  screened) terminals.
 
1) Get to first screen where Quest is a choice and select it.
2) Enter in library card number and then the last 4 digits of your telephone number or other code you've chosen.  (Ask librarian if you are confused.)
3) At "Services Index" Screen, use down arrow key to get to "Other libraries and resources"
4) Hit arrow right key to get to list on the right.
5) Hit down arrow key to get to "Seattle Community Network (SCN) and hit enter.
6) Login prompt, first put in user ID (e.g. ba123)
7) At password, type your chosen password.
8) Read and follow message at BOTTOM OF SCREEN  (A messages askes you to press space or enter.)
 
C. Change your password  [Screen:  SCN Main Menu]
 
1) At main SCN menu, choose 7, SCN Utilities.
2) Then choose 1, User Account Services.
3) Then select 2, Change your Password.
4) And again, select 2, Change your Password (again).
5) Old Password:  (Type in your old password here.)
6) New Password.  (Type in your new password here.)
7) Retype new Password.  (Re-type your new password to be sure there was no typographical error in the first attempt.)
 
  Write your new password somewhere in case you forget it.
 
8) Get out of utilities by following messages and going back to the main SCN menu. (m will bring up the main menu.)
 
  You can change your password any time you want.
 
5. GETTING INTO THE (PINE) E MAIL PROGRAM.  [5 Minutes]
 
A. To get into Pine, at the command prompt (your choice==> ) type pine.  Or, follow the menu (E mail menu...)
B. Press 1 (Start Pine to read and send mail).  Pine prints a Welcome when you first login.  Information in that message will be covered in class, so just enter through it.
 
 Pine automatically opens into INBOX on your folder list, and shows you all your new mail.
 
6. USING E-MAIL  [45 Minutes]  [Screen:  Pine Inbox Index or Pine Main Menu]
 
A. To send a message, do the following.
1) Press m for main menu.
2) Press c for compose
(a) Type a user I.D. after TO: and Enter or Down Arrow. If user I.D. is followed by @scn.org, you don't need to type this, Pine will fill it in.
(b) For practicing in class, type your own user I.D. at CC: .  (Courtesy Copy).
 [Try 3-to-5 on your own]
 
3) Courtesy Copies (cc).  This function allows you to send this message to 2nd, 3rd, or multiple recipient(s).  You can also use it to send a copy to yourself.
4) Press ^ r (while the cursor is in the mail to section).  An expanded set of options shows.
5) Up Arrow to BCC: (Blind courtesy copy) and type in a user I.D.  This will send the message to the user I.D.s you list here, without the TO: and CC: recipients knowing about it.
 
    Other options explained in Pine Tutorial and Help Menus.
 
6) Enter or Down Arrow past Attchmnt.
 
7) Type a short description of your message in SUBJECT: and Enter or Down Arrow.
8) In the space under Message Text, type a message.
 
  Bottom of screen has editing & other command options for compose function.  Each part of PIne (Address Book, Setup)  has different set of command options.  Note lighted status line shows up when you enter a command, & it gives useful info.
 
9) to finally send the message, use ^X and then press y [Yes] or Enter.
(a) When your message is sent, Pine will go back to the previous screen you were on.
(b) To get back to INBOX , press m for main menu.  Then, press L (for folder List). Then arrow to inbox, and enter.
 
B. On your own, explore other commands  [Screen:  Composing Pine e-mail message]
 
1) ^ c = Cancel.  This command works in many menus.  Use it to start over or get out of a mess.
2) ^ o = Postpone.  This will put the message you are writing in a special file.  You can start it up again by typing c for compose.  Useful when you have forgotten something that you need to look up in another file, folder, or e mail message.  You can also postpone indefinitely.  Whenever you hit c for compose you will be asked:
3) ^ g or Go Help.  Gives extended comand for editing.
 
C. Reading New Mail DURING SESSION  [Almost Any Pine Menu]
 
1) Quit Pine to load your new mail.  The SCN program will load new mail while you are in Pine, but Pine will not show the new mail in your account while you are inside Pine.  You must Quit and Start Pine again.
(a) Press m Main and Q Quit.
(b) Enter, or press y [Yes]
(c) Press 1 restart Pine (start Pine and read and send e-mail).
 
D. Read mail  [Screen:  Pine Inbox Index]
 
1) Highlight message you want to open and read with Up/Down arrow.
2) Enter
3) Use Up/Down arrows to scroll up and down message.
4) Use (space bar) to move down one screen.
5) Use + (plus sign) to move down one screen
6) Use - (minus sign) to move up one screen.
7) Explore other command options at bottom of screen:
(a) o = Other.  Hit 3 times to see all commands.  4th time gets you back to 1st set.
(b) n = Next. Will open the next message down your index.
(c) d = Delete.  Marks current message for deletion and brings next message onto screen.  Messages marked for deletion can be expunged (deleted) when exiting Pine.
(d) p = Previous.  Opens the message previous, or up, from current message.
 
E. Reply to message  [Screen:  Reading a Pine E-mail Message]
 
1) Open a message from another user.
2) Press r [Reply]
3) Status line prompts "Include original message in reply?" Press y or n.
(a) y [Yes] will include the original message in the reply message: you can edit it.   n [No] will transfer the FROM: user I.D. to the TO: box, and copy the SUBJECT: line from the original.
4) Status line prompts "Reply to all recipients?" Press y or n.
(a) y [Yes] will send your reply to all cc: user I.D.s.  n [No] will only reply to the FROM: user I.D.
5) Type your additions to the message, or your reply.  You are free to edit any and all parts of the message.
6) "Use Ctrl Shft 6 and down or up arrow key to select a section for deletion. ^K will then delete the selection or the line the cursor is in.  ^U will undelete the action if there was a mistake.
7) ^ x Send.
8) Press y or n.
 
F. Forward message  [Screen:  Reading a Pine E-mail Message]
 
1) Highlight a message and Enter.
2) f  [Forward].  (The current message is automatically re-printed as a new message.  Add TO: and other info as you would a new message.

8. QUITTING SCN  [Screen:  Almost Any Pine Screen]
 
A. Press m Main and Q Quit to quit Pine/Enter to confirm.
B. To quit SCN, at the Your Choice>: press x, and then to confirm logoff question: "Are you sure you want to exit Seattle Community Network?" Press y (Yes] or n [No].

 
APPENDIX A.
Intermediate E-mail.

Three ways to dial in with your modem to connect to SCN:

1. SCN:  (206) 386-4199 or 654-7044.  At "Connect" message, press enter and then enter your account. (for example, ab222@scn.org)

2. Use these King County Library System dial-in numbers.

You should then be admitted into SCN and be able to use the system for e-mail, etc.

 APPENDIX B.
Save A Copy Of Each Of Your Outgoing Messages
 
 Creating a Folder to Hold a Copy of Each Sent Message
1. To start sent-msgs folder, first go to Pine’s Main Menu.
2. Select Setup.
3. Then, from list at bottom of page, choose Config.
4. On the first page arrow down to the line: default fcc =
5. Look at bottom of screen;  one choice is “change value”  Choose that.
6. You will then be able to type in a line so put in “sent-messages” (Include the hyphen but not the quotation marks.).
7. Then look for a command  at the bottom that lets you exit and/or save the choice.
8. See list at bottom:  Return = accept change.
9. Then back out of the Config. Menu and you have created a Sent-messages folder.
 
 To make any other folder all you have to do, when you are reading a message, is press "s" for save and when it asks you for a folder name type whatever you want for the permanent name of your new folder and press enter. If that folder doesn't exist Pine will ask you if you want to create it. Say (Yes] and the message will be saved to the new folder.

 Example:
 If you want to create a folder named “family” do it when you are reading a message from your brother.  Press  s for “save”, and when asked if you want to create a folder, press y for “yes.”  Then, when asked for a name, type “family” and enter.  Done.
 APPENDIX C.
Work Directory
 
 When reading mail, note that one can insert files (incoming message, etc.) into the work directory and, then modify that file, and send the modified ifile out as an inserts or attachments.to several recipients at several separate times.  Press "e" for "export" and then type in a name you chose for the file.

A. Go out of Pine e-mail to SCN main menu.
1. Type "Go file" to get to “Freeport editor to work with your files.”  (VERY useful!).  Examine your work directory with menu choice 13.  (The number might change, so pay attention to the wording of this line.
2. Following are most of the useful commands.
1) delete (d)
2) undelete (u)
3) rename (r)
4) quit (q)
5) edit (e) This one opens the file.
 
B. Edit your file that you’ve opened in the work directory.
1. Highlight (a method of selecting text) [Ctrl Shft 6], then
2. Use ^k & ^u to cut and paste highlighted text.  (Try both.)
3. Mangle a paragraph, and then use ^j to Justify.

ATTACH A FILE

A. When creating an e-mail message to send, you MAY attach another file which you have already saved into your work directory.
1. At ATTACH, press ^j.
2. At question "File to attach," press ^t to get files from work directory.
3. Arrow to chosen file and hit enter.  If you wish, type a comment about the attachment. Then enter; then send.
 
B. Sometimes it is preferable to just insert the file from the work directory into the body of the e-mail message.  Only ASCII texts can be inserted this way.
1. Rather than attaching with ^j, instead move your cursor into the area for writing messages.
2. Then [No]tice at the bottom, ^r triggers the “Read File” function.  Do it.
 APPENDIX D.
USING THE ADDRESS BOOK.

A. To put an address into your address book,

1. Start at main menu. (Enter m.)
2. Select address book and open it.
3. The system will bring you to a screen with two address book options;  chose the first one by pressing enter.
4. The system will then present you with an address form to fill out.
5. Fill it out.
6. Put in a nickname if you want.  (E.g. For Fred Schmerklebaum, freds@wolfnet.com, you could use “fred”.  Or, for your environmental discussion group of, say, 12 persons, you could use “env” as the nickname for the entire group).
7. Then go down to the line for the e-mail address and type in Fred’s e-mail address.  Or, if you are putting in a group, type the first e-mail address, and then immediately type a comma and then hit the space bar one time.  Then type in the next e-mail address.  Continue to add all the addresses, separated by a comma and a space, for the group, separating each by a comma and a space.
8. Then, look at the bottom of the screen for the command to accept and exit, and follow the prompts until you are again looking at the general address page.  At that point, go to the main menu.  You have completed adding an address to the address book.
 
  Use the address.
 
B. When you start a message (by pressing c, for “compose.”), you can fill in the address at the “To” spot
1. by typing in the nickname only, or
2. by pressing ^t to get to the address book.
 
C. Once you are in the address book, open the book (enter) and then arrow to the address you want.  Select it (enter will do it), and the system will first put the address in the “To” spot on the new message and then bounce you to that new message so you can continue composing your message.
 
 You’ve done it.  Treat yourself!
