How You See a Community is Much a Matter of How You Look at it.
.
In learning about communities, it is useful to know about the science of sociology, and the reasoning behind its practical applications such as community empowerment. . The most important contribution of the discipline is the “Sociological Perspective,” the way of defining and looking at society used by social scientists.
..
Further, as a foundation for this topic, it is useful to look at the three founding fathers of sociology, Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. . While they did not contribute the terms or identify the approaches, their writings led sociologists to three classical perspectives, conflict, symbolic interaction and functional.
..
Unlike the standard modules on this site, this module does not consist of different documents for different readers and different purposes. . All are short essays based upon my lecture notes, and aimed at the beginner in the study of sociology.
..
Serious students are advised to start with these but go to more standard and complete sources of the three classical sociologists and the three classical perspectives.
