I am originally from
India but have been working in Hong Kong for the past 7 years. I work for
a market research company and normally put in long hours of work. Right
from the time I was in university I wanted to do something to help people.
At the same time I strongly believed that you could help someone only by
helping them help themselves – a concept that has been reiterated several
times in the training materials at CMP.

| In
Hong Kong I could not do much as I did not speak the local language (Cantonese),
I still don’t speak the language as I find it extremely difficult. One
day on an erratic impulse I started looking for online volunteer opportunities
and of course reached the UN website where I applied to several organizations.
What impressed me immediately about Phil was the instant response I got
from him. Almost the same day that I had applied I received a response
– a practice that I try very hard to follow now when I recruit volunteers
for translations. There was no fuss about filling out forms etc just plain,
simple volunteer work, and that got me hooked. I did not try out any other
organization after that and now any free time that I have is used for helping
Phil with translations or co ordination. |

I have been lucky to
have traveled quite a lot for work, unfortunately I have not always been
able to see the countries the way I would like to see them. It has always
been my dream to take a year off from work and just start on a journey,
with no plans and taking it just as it comes, maybe I will do that someday.

Basically I am a shy
person who does not open up to people very easily, I have a few friends
who have been around for long but I rarely make new friends wherever I
go. I like to keep to myself, my friends or my family. I love reading,
travelling and spending time with my two nieces – who are adorable.

I do not aim at making
the world a better place, I do not want to think that I can change lives
but I do know that I can make good use of my spare time by working for
this website. Every page that I translate or help translate, may in some
small way help someone, that’s enough for me.
