Drug Awareness – Detective Jay Seese

Detective Jay Seese discussed drug awareness. 

Chief’s Update

Chief Haines said Captain Lori Sutter returned this week from the FBI National Academy.

Chief Haines said he doesn’t believe there will be any cuts to the 2004 police department budget. He said that the department will continue to fund the DV Advocate position and it will not be cut. The budget is pending City Council review in October.

Chief Haines said Records Manager Rosa Krows is retiring at the end of September. He said he is trying to get a Police Information Tech position approved with the City. The Mayor has already approved it; though not finally approved by the City.

Chief Haines discussed the new 12-hour patrol shifts. He said the shifts are working so far. This shift allows the department to post two new traffic officer positions in the next few days. Chief Haines said we are not adding people to the police department, but taking people from Patrol.

Chief Haines gave an update on the RAIN Project.

Chief Haines then discussed the progress on the "In Car Video" system.

Discussion of 2003 Goals

The date for the council presentation needs to be confirmed, either October 20 or October 27. Marja Murray said she would check with Jane Cantu to find out when the Mayor will be present. (October 20 is confirmed for the council presentation.)

Awards: Gregg said it takes 1 week or 10 days to make the plaque. Ideas for nominees discussed. Mary Hulvey’s name given as nominee for citizen. Jeri nominated Ted Rutt as police nominee. Gregg Kats nominated Karen Sotace as police nominee.

Christine said she would draft a letter for review next week for the presentation. Will finalize nominations at October 8 board meeting.

Chief Haines said that he would contact training officer about Spanish training.

Marja Murray passed out information on Somali community and DV training for the board to review. Also Crime Prevention video from SPD for Hispanic community was given to Robbie.

Chief Haines said he still wants to have Patrol and the detectives in the same facility.

The car for citizen patrol program was discussed. Chief Haines said it depends on the budget process if it is approved. He said it also depends on the Public Works budget. Chief Haines said he will know in the next few days and will know by the next meeting.

Marketing Material for Board – Gregg Kats

Gregg said he needs input on what the board wants on the flyer. Gregg said would bring finalized version to next meeting or mail to everyone before hand. Christine said suggesting putting the COP Awards and Spanish immersion training for achieved goals on the flyer.

Jeri said she could help with printing the flyer. Terry suggested having a comments section so people can respond back to us.

Marja will send updated roster to Gregg for marketing material.

Date for Tour of Police Department

The November meeting is scheduled for November 12. Chief Haines said can get some help from people to give a tour. So will take about 45 minutes. Can meet here first in Conference #5.

Good of the Order

Regarding the election of a new residential board member, Chief Haines encouraged board to reach out or recruit someone from ethnic or minority community. Marja Murray will contact previous applicants and invite to the November 12 meeting. The board can invite additional applicants to the November meeting also.

Kimberly gave update of school year.

Jeri mentioned citizen patrol and she said there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm for citizen patrol. Chief Haines said if car approved then can use as springboard. He said would need an officer to be in charge of program to get it off on the right foot. Once get word out to the community then will have more people involved. Chief Haines will find out if someone in the department is interested.

Chief Haines said the Halfway House went to Spokane Street in Seattle.

Gregg said he would like a Valley Com tour. Can discuss at next meeting.

Jack said interesting to see Crime Rates are down across the country.

Chief Haines said that Seattle has had an increase in property crime. In Tukwila, burglary has increased and we are getting on top of that. Car theft has gone into normal range now.

Jack said goodbye and thanked the board.

Marja Murray discussed the upcoming volunteer event.
