From jd@scn.org Sat Feb 20 17:28:28 1999 Date: Sat, 20 Feb 1999 11:27:24 -0800 (PST) From: SCN User To: local-computer-activists@scn.org Subject: Privacy Alert: HB 1881 PRIVACY BILL HEARING ON FRIDAY, 2/26 Do you want your Social Security number linked to your driver license? If not, here is one last chance to do something about it: WHEN: Friday, February 26th at 1:30 p.m. in Olympia House Hearing Room B WHAT: The House Judiciary Committee will accept public testimony on House Bill 1881, "AN ACT Relating to protecting privacy by restricting the use of social security account numbers." Overall, HB 1881 limits the use of the Social Security number by both government and business and provides fines and penalties for violations of the law. Section 9 of the bill will stop the current state requirement for SSNs as a condition of license renewal until at least October 1, 2000, the latest Federal "deadline". This will buy more time to continue the fight at the Federal level, where overwhelming public concern about privacy has temporarily brought proposed Federal driver license and banking regulations to a halt. WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1. Legislators need to hear from you, in person, at this hearing. There will be opposition to the bill, and public support is essential. 2. Call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 to leave a message for your legislators supporting HB 1881. 3. Pass this message on to as many friends as you can. 4. As I prepare CPSR testimony on this bill, I would welcome additional examples of successful recordkeeping alternatives to the SSN. If you are a database manager, a letter from you, or better yet, your presence in Olympia, would be particularly effective. However, ALL members of the public are important at the hearing, whether they testify or just sign the attendance roster in support of the bill. Please let me know your thoughts, and forward me a copy of any letters or messages you send on the bill. Let me know if you might be able to attend the hearing on Friday.
