Who are We?
CPSR is a national organization of computer professionals and other concerned parties, who are interested in computer related issues that impact society at large.What have we done?
In its 14 years, CPSR has provided information and sponsored activities centered issues of computers and society such as:
- Raised public awareness on the issue of risk and reliability with respect to the Strategic Defense Initiative.
- Started the Civil Liberties Program in Washington D.C., which is concentrating on working with lawmakers to institute consistent legislation on electronic information policy while ensuring first amendment rights and personal privacy.
- Started the 21st Century Project which is assessing how science and technology policies can be redirected away from the military and towards human needs as we move into the next century.
- Started a working group called the Workplace Project, which is focusing on how computers can be used humanly in the workplace.
- Organized and sponsored the following conferences:
"Directions and Implications of Advanced Computing" (DIAC '87, '88, '90, '92, '94)
"Participatory Design" (PDC '90, '92, '94), and
"Computers, Freedom, and Privacy" (CFP '91, '92).What has CPSR/Seattle done?
Here is a list of activities that CPSR/Seattle has been involved in since its formation in 1983:
- Sponsored talks on various issues, such as women in computing, computers and the environment, community networks, and computers and privacy.
- Formed a group called Computers for Activists that helped non-profit organizations with their computing needs.
- Formed a special interest group that is concerned with electronic information policy issues in Washington State.
- Formed a working group that has formed the Seattle Community Network
