RESTOR. PROJECTJoan Moritz 527-9157 Since TCA is an all volunteer organization, revitalization of Thorton Creek depends on pro-active individuals leading work parties and giving extra time to the care of the creek. One way to do this is for a person to take responsibility to watch and care for a specific location.
Stream Care Leadership There has been some concern that there is not a Stream Care Leader for the Meadowbrook wetlands and creeklet. If you live in the vicinity of the Meadowbrook area and want to help with the maintenance of the new plantings there as well as invasive plant removal or be included in future workparties, contact Kevin Burkhart at 362-5149. Kevin has a long history with Meadowbrook and is responsible for the edible plant project on the slope above the wetlands. He has also provided special native plant related curriculum for the Nathan Hale Horticulture students and is a landscapist by trade.
Stream Care Leaders are good contact people for their neighborhood in reporting problems and taking action on those reports. They are also helpful for TCA when volunteers call us looking for projects to get involved in. If we have an appointed steward, we can direct those volunteers to someone who is familiar with the site, knows what needs to be done, and can sponsor community credit hours for high school and college aged youth. Stream Care Leaders in our watershed are listed in the TCA Currents and in some of our brochures so neighbors and people moving into their neighborhood can contact them about the creek. All of our Stream Care Leaders are highly respected and considered heros of the Thornton Creek watershed! If you are thinking of becoming a Stream Care Leader, contact Janine Van Sanden at 233-3979 and TCA at 367-4635 so we can help get you started and listed on our website. Seattle Public Utilities has developed training now for volunteers who are willing to commit to this type of role, so don't let a lack of knowledge stop you. Use it as an opportunity to tap into incredible amounts of information and resources for watersheds. Call Bob Spencer at Seattle Public Utilities at 206-684-4163 to find out when the next course will be held.If you are interested in starting a Stream Care Group please call 367-4635 for more information.
