Snowy Owl [Snowy face] driving guide

The intent of this page is to provide driving directions to sites where multiple Snowy's have been reported.

The West 90 on Samish Flats

Find the town of Edison on any map of Washington; it's due west of exit 236 on I5. The road through Edison enters from the East and exits to the south. Driving south from Edison, you will meet the Sammish Island Road in a block or two, just past the "Liquor Store". Turn right (west) on that road and continue until you meet the Bayview-Edison Road (maybe a mile). Go straight through that three-way intersection. About a half mile west is a right-angle turn to the north (the "west 90" degree turn). Stop there.

There is a small barn to the left and a large shed west of the road. Look south from there to a fence line in the distance. Many snowies are often on the posts of that fence and others in the area bounded by the road, the Bayview-Edison Road and the dike. I've seen one also in the field north and east of your location. UPDATE 2/9/97
I thought that you might be interested to know that most of the Snowy Owls that have hung out at the "West 90" on the Samish Flats seemed to have moved east towards the Samish River. Various reports lately have stated the "Samish River mouth" but really you don't see the delta where the owls are, they favor a field upstream a bit.
To find them: from the "T" formed by Bayview/ Edison Rd and Samish Island Rd go east towards Edison. The road turns north in about 1/4 mile then east again. Immediately after crossing the bridge over Samish River park on the left side of the road, near a "Port-o-let" toilet and cross to the south side of the road. There's a dirt area here that overlooks a large farm field.

The West 90 | The Big Ditch | Boundary Bay | Damon Point

The Big Ditch

Big Ditch is located north of Stanwood. To get there, take I-5 north to Exit 212 (Stanwood/Rte 532). Before you enter Stanwood, take a right turn just before crossing the railroad. The road just before crossing the railroad is Pioneer Hwy. It is the main route north to Conway. About 4 miles along this road, another road joins from the left (Old Pacific Highway) Right at this intersection there is a primitive road (some big potholes) heading out to the shoreline. It is signed on the left Big Ditch. Drive to the end.

The West 90 | The Big Ditch | Boundary Bay | Damon Point

72nd Street at Boundary Bay in B.C.

72nd Street runs north from the northwest end of Boundary Bay. From Seattle, take Hwy 99 well past White Rock and Mud Bay to the Hwy 10 exit (also called Ladner Trunk Rd). Drive west on Hwy 10 to 72nd. Turn left (south) and drive to the dyke at the end of the road. The Snowy Owls should be visible from there. Check all of the fields for many other species (SE Owl, RL Hawk, Bald and possibly Golden eagles, BB Plover, Dunlin, Peregrine Falcon, waterfowl, Northern Shrike, etc.)

If you should miss the HWY 10 exit, don't worry. Continue on 99 to the Hwy 17 exit and take it south toward the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Before driving that far, however, turn left (east) onto Hwy 10, to 72nd, then right (south), etc.

UPDATE 2/5/97
I accessed the area from 64th instead of 72nd - a shorter walk by half to just get to where the Snowys were hanging out. [From an email posted by Jon Williams jon@wport.com]

Damon Point, Ocean Shores

When you turn into Ocean Shores through the entry portal, the road you're on goes straight to the end of the Ocean Shores peninsula. The road veers right and passes the Silver King Motel. Very shortly thereafter, the Damon Point Road (dirt & gravel) goes off to the left. A sign labeled "Damon Point State Park" marks the road. On Saturday (Dec. 21st), we had to walk south past the "hidden pond" (aka Catala Lagoon) to reach the Snowy Owls.
