Global Citizenship Study Abroad

Tentative Itinerary, January 20 - 30, 2006

January 20

Arrival into Caracas, Maquetia International Airport.

Transfer to Lodging

January 21-23 Community Visits in Lara State (or elsewhere)

January 21

8:00 am Breakfast and Leave Caracas.
9:00 am Travel to Lara. Orientation Meeting: This includes presentations by Evergreen State College facilitator (to frame the educational purpose of the tour) and Global Exchange staff and tour leader on the ground to review of Global Exchange codes of conduct and expectations: and an overview of recent Venezuela history.
12:30 pm Lunch and Visit to a Barquisimeto Community visit to homes and engage in conversations with residents in the barrios.
3:00 pm Afro-Venezuelan music presentation by Movimiento Cultural San Juan, Barrio José Félix Ribas.
6:00 pm Dinner at hotel

January 22

8:00 am Breakfast
9:00 am Brief downtown tour of historic sector of Barquisimeto
10:00 am Visit to Center of Citizen Participation in Barrio La Carucieña (community radio, community television, organic community garden, visit to new squatter barrio "Libertad Bolivariana")
1:00 pm Lunch
2:30 pm Visits to coffee and local agricultural cooperatives.
7:00 pm Dinner

January 23

8:00 am Breakfast
9:00 am Bus trip Back to Caracas
1:00 pm Lunch
After lunch Registration for WSF
3:30 pm Visit to a Barrio Adentro medical mission
6:30 pm Dinner at hotel
8:00 pm Evening discussion circle and visit with youth representatives from a community based media project (or another NGO)

January 24th -28th World Social Forum

City tour by bus of Miraflores, Puente Llaguno, and Plaza Bolivar, birthplace of Simon Bolivar).

Options and activities to be announced every day.

Evening activities requested:

  1. Meeting with an opposition group or rep.
  2. Other evenings during these nights are to be kept free for student/faculty Exchanges (except for any optional acitivities that might be included if the group is large or if is an important WSF event occurring).

January 29 Visit to a Costal Community, Reflections and Wrap-up

8:00 am Breakfast at hotel
Day Community Visit. Activities TBA
6:30 pm Dinner
7:30 pm Closing evaluation and wrap-up meeting.
Later... Last night celebration activity
