Launching a non-profit arts organization and facility in Olympia,

We are interested in working with a diverse set of projects. Ideally
the projects will support communities or positive social change. These
could include
community information systems,
art projects,
community development and service,
policy development,
citizen science,
media,
plan development
public deliberation,
and many others.
Students — and groups — who have done preparatory work in other
programs or elsewhere are especially encouraged to enroll for the APSE
program to continue their project work. The faculty will also identify
several project possibilities. The program will consider research and
theory in addition to pragmatic project work. APSE will constitute a
single supportive enterprise and meet as a group throughout all three
quarters on a regular scheduled basis.
A critical part of Evergreen's education involves working on projects.
In fact this is one area in which many Evergreen students truly excel:
student teams apply what they've learned while playing a strong role in
their own ongoing education. In fact in cases like these, faculty
members often take a back seat, helping to facilitate the project by
bringing in resources or new information and educational opportunities
on an as needed basis.
Students will be expected to participate in developing shared resources,
planning the curriculum, etc. Students from the various teams will
keep abreast of progress in the other projects and interact with them
in various capacities throughout the three quarters.
The faculty member will act primarily as a facilitator. Some of the
additional skills that a faculty member might help cultivate include
quantitative and qualitative research, media, computer, leadership,
team-building, community development, and theoretical and pragmatic
information and knowledge in specific content areas. As a group we
will explore how workshops, guest speakers, field trips, videos, etc.
can support our work.
Part of our focus will be on strengthening Evergreen's capacity for
supporting and sustaining multi-year team project work as key component
of its academic program. (For example, we could even help seek outside
funding.) We intend to explore the idea of an ongoing APSE as an
approach that could ultimately play a useful ongoing
role in Evergreen's Evening and Weekend Studies and other areas within
the college. One obvious avenue is working with the
Center for Community-Based Learning and Action. We would also want to
explore opportunities for collaboration with other programs, planning
units, and Evergreen Centers. Ideally this would result in an approach
that is successful among students, faculty and the community. Ideally
APSE will become well-integrated within Evergreen's
framework and reflect Evergreen's core values every
quarter of every year (including summer).
