Personal background

I think I have always loved dancing, but it was not until I started dancing in 1975 with the Washington State University Folkdancers that I had a focus for that passion. Since then, I have done many different kinds of dancing: international folk dancing, belly dancing, square dancing, contra, Latin, African, tango, shag, ballroom, vintage, Charleston, tap, flamenco, hustle, swing (East and West Coast), Balboa, and Lindy Hop (and probably a few other kinds that I don't recall).

I performed with the Washington State University International Folkdancers for three years when I was in college. I was a founding member of the Savoy Swing Club (1993) and performed with the Savoy Swing Club Performance Troupe for three years. I also occasionally performed with the Seaside Pavilion Historic Dance Troupe.

I have performed with Enzian Schuhplattler since September 1993, although I did not officially join the club until January of 1996. In addition to performing, I am the ladies' dance instructor, publicity chair, and also the Webmeisterin. If you have comments about this Web site, let me know!

I am very interested in other cultures and their dances. I spent nine months in Europe in 1977-78, going to college and traveling. I have friends in Denmark and a pen-pal in Germany to whom I have written since 1970. I have visited her nine times, most recently in July of 2010. I speak some German and continue to study the language.

I enjoy traveling and have visited Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, England, Scotland, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Dominica, St. Thomas, and 45 states in the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii.

I am married to Roger Mowery, who is also a member of Enzian Schuhplattler. In addition to our activities with Enzian, we teach folk dance, waltz, East Coast swing, and Lindy Hop, and perform many different types of dancing.

Other Ethnic and Dance-related Activities

I have been a member of Northwest Folkdancers, Incorporated (NFDI) since my college years. NFDI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and furthering the cause of folk dancing in the northwestern United States and Canada. I was the president of the organization for ten years, from 1997–2006. I have been the treasurer for NFDI since 2007. NFDI publishes a magazine that contains a listing of current dance classes and events as well as costume descriptions, recipes, and other articles of interest; I have been co-editor of the NFDI newsletter since 2002. If you are interested in joining NFDI, you may want to visit the NFDI Web site. I am also the Webmaster for that site.

I am a member of the National Folk Organization.

Since May of 2003, I have been the editor for the Skandia newsletter. Visit the Skandia Web site at http://www.skandia-folkdance.org/. I also handle publicity for Skandia.

Since November of 2007, I have been the newsletter editor for the Seattle Folklore Society.

In addition to practicing and performing with Enzian, I regularly dance with the Seattle Center Folkdancers Monday nights at Seattle Center, at the Skandia Folkdance Society dances on 1st and 3rd Fridays, at the waltz dances at Sonny Newman's Dance Hall (2nd Fridays), at the monthly dance concerts of the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society, and wherever else I can make time to go.

I am a writer; I earn my living by writing technical documentation for the software and maritime industries, but I also enjoy writing about a variety of other things.
