K-12 Education

A crucial aspect of the PSEEC is to reach out to children, providing them with exposure to the science and math concepts central to engineering, but also informing them about career opportunities. Our K-12 Department offers the following below:

*Information on engineers and scientists who volunteer in K-12 classrooms.

*Information on a program called JETS for teenagers who would like to learn more about engineering as a career.

Through the PSEEC, and a division of it known as the Engineering and Science Resource Bureau (ESRB), engineers and scientists volunteer their time in Puget Sound classrooms providing an extremely valuable service to teachers who want assistance with educating their students in the areas of science and math. The engineers and scientists offer expertise and understanding beyond the scope of what teachers can be expected to know. In our increasingly technological and scientific world, children must become proficient in these areas, and develop a true understanding available only through first-hand experience. Working with a volunteer from the PSEEC enables teachers to provide students with this experience.

If you are a teacher and would like more information about having an engineer volunteer in your classroom, please contact us by going to comments and questions.

To learn more about engineering and the diversity of specialized areas, see our list of types of engineering. This list is particularly helpful if you already have a specific project in mind, but don't know what kind of engineer would be the best qualified to help you. It is also motivating and inspiring when you see the range of possibilities!

If you are an engineer or scientist who would like to participate in this wonderful program and spend time with kids in the class room introducing them to the principles of science, math and technology in a hands-on, engaging and exciting matter, please contact us by going to comments and questions.

Separate from the PSEEC, a program called "A World in Motion" coordinates automotive engineers to work with grades 4 through 9 in the classroom. The world of basic math, technology and physics is taught by hands-on experience while building simple vehicles, boats and airplanes. The program is coordinated through the Northwest chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers. To find out more about the SAE, Northwest Chapter, go to the PSEC web site at http://www.scn.org/psec/ and click on Member Societies. You can also go to the Society of Automotive Engineers web site at http://www.sae.org . For more information about "A World in Motion," please contact us by going to comments and questions.

In addition, check our current PSEEC information for volunteering and tutoring related events. Attending one of these events can be helpful even if you have not decided to volunteer yet, by giving you a glimpse into what is actually involved.
