Second STEAMScience, Technology, Engineering and Math
An Educational Resources Newsletter No. 82 - September 2000 |
Hello again!
Some of you have wondered if this ESRB newsletter had completely disappeared into a black hole. Not so! It's just that the annual PSEC summertime slump caught up with the Editor and there was nothing urgent to report. However we are still alive and getting prepared for the new fall season of school classroom and other educational activities.
We are having a brief kick-off meeting for all ESRB volunteers, new and old, and all other friends at 10.00 am. on Saturday morning, October 7th. Come and join us and learn about the MoF's education programs at:
The Museum of Flight's
Great Gallery and the Red Barn
9404 East Marginal Way So, SeattleAsk for the Children's Exhibit Hangar.
It's Open House for all Educators. Teachers, engineers and their students are invited to check out the new features of the Museum. Come and see when, where, why and how Northwest Aviation began.
The History of Hang Gliding is the current featured exhibit.
Planning for the AD 2001 Engineering Fairs
Start now to encourage all your pupils, teachers and K-12 schools to put together a field trip to this exciting annual science event. The Engineer's Fair will again be at the Crossroads Shopping Mall at Overlake next year, on Saturday, February 17th and Sunday the 18th. Another will be held at the Auburn Mall on Feb. 13th/14th. You can help us to make these the best Engineer's Fairs of the 21st. Century.
Everyone coming to the Fairs has a chance to talk to working engineers, and explore with them the latest technology, and the techniques we use to solve the problems of aircraft and automotive design, civil and military construction, electrical-electronic systems, manufacturing, welding technology, and transportation systems of every kind. Children will enjoy the craft competitions and get various freebies. Contact your own Society's PSEC rep. and help to plan your booth.
Your children and grandchildren (borrow some?) can join hands-on science explorations with the Boeing Bluebills volunteers and assist the engineers and teachers involved in Science Olympiad, World in Motion, Future Engineers and Scientists of America, and Math Counts.
What role will you play?
Fair 2001 flyers and posters for you to read and deliver to the teachers and schools of your choice are sent free from www.eweek.org. So register the details with them.
Please don't delay, make your Web and telephone contacts now, and be sure to get the materials into the right hands in time for all the school PTA and teacher's AD. 2001 field trip plans !
Future Scientists & Engineers of America
FSEA is a national program that promotes school-industry-mentor partnerships and provides students with a continual hands-on learning experience in science and technology. Students from grades 4 to 12 develop a personal portfolio of certificates and awards for projects, as they advance through five levels from 'Engineering Technician' to 'Engineering Specialist' and gain their appropriate badges. We will help you to establish any requested FSEA Chapters in schools in and around greater Seattle, and for your own chosen school. Some sponsoring funds are available.

Donate Your Engineering Society Monthly Magazines to Local High Schools
Reminding you once again to call on your nearest High School librarians to tell them you can deliver a free monthly supply of the latest engineering and scientific information. Let them know you are willing to discuss the content of engineering and science articles about all forms of land and space transportation, structures and materials, electrical and electronic devices, with any interested students or teachers. Encourage the school librarians to consider you as an easily-available expert mentor, and also ask them to publicize your availability to all students and teachers.
