If you are a high school student considering a career in engineering, you should check out the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS). Participation in JETS programs will allow you to learn more about what engineers do. Among the programs offered by JETS are:
TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science), in which high school students work together in teams to tackle real world problems, thereby learning two important engineering skills: team work and problem solving.
NEDC (National Engineering Design Challenge), also a competition, in which teams of high school students are presented with the challenge of solving a societal need through every stage of the engineering process, from design to fabrication to demonstration.
NEAS+ (National Engineering Aptitude Search+) is a survey you give yourself to determine your ability and preparation in the basic areas so important to engineering: mathematics, science and reasoning.
JETS also has brochures, books and videotapes available. For more information, write JETS, Inc., 1420 King St., Suite 405, Alexandria, VA 22314-2794.
