At the Fremont Arts Council's Universal Headquarters we take pride in exhibiting our own artwork. One of the first acts of the Arts Council on accepting the lease from the Seattle School Department was to collaborate with the School in creating ceramic murals on the retaining walls outside the school grounds and the Powerhouse. It was the foundation for what has proved to be a harmonious and long-lived relationship between B.F. Day and the FAC.
Flanking the entry to the Powerhouse are mosaics depicting Brother Sun and Sister Moon (among other things). The design credit goes to David Hartz, an outstanding graphic designer and fire artist. But this came about in a strange and sad way. Our brother Dave McKay was to have designed the mosaics, but when the time came he was laid up with his fatal illness. Dave Hartz completed the sketches and brought them to McKay for review. McKay gave his blessing to the designs during his last days in our dimension; the mosaics were realized after his passing.
