The Fremont Arts Council has made its Headquarters at the old Powerhouse on the grounds of the B.F. Day School since 1994. The building originally housed the steam plant for the Day Elementary School, established in 1892, and one of our first challenges was removing the boilers and piping; more than six tons of grungy metal had to be torn out and disposed of! We lease the space from the Seattle School Department.

Utilizing a Small & Simple grant, the Arts Council junked the boilers, opening a large, concrete floored open space for working our magic. Since then we have made such improvements to the building as putting on a new roof; adding two mezzanines which greatly increase floor space and work and storage areas; installing work lights and improving the heating; and re-plumbing the bathroom.* Since we are artists, we have decorated the building with our artwork; one of our first projects in cooperation with the School was creation of the Brother Sun and Sister Moon mosaics which flank the Powerhouse, and a large mosaic for the B.F. Day School itself at the corner of N 39th Street and Fremont Avenue N.

The Powerhouse is the central facility of the Fremont Arts Council. Our monthly meetings are held here on the first Tuesday of every month beginning at 7 p.m. The Powerhouse also houses our workshops and classes, our library, our tools and collections, our stock of materials. It plays host to numerous committee meetings and serves as the indispensable staging area for such big celebrations as the Solstice Parade and Trolloween.

*These improvements were made possible by generous donations from individuals and businesses in the community. Click here to make a donation to the Fremont Arts Council.
