The ad hoc fundraising committee suggests that business Meeting proceed with two separate but parallel processes as follows:1) Appoint a Capital Campaign Committee. The purpose of this committee will be to oversee the capital campaign fundraising for $500,000 over the next three years. One of the committee's early tasks will be to consider whether or not UFM should hire a fundraising consultant to help with the capital campaign. The ad hoc fundraising committee recommends that the Capital Campaign Committee and Project Committee begin their work simultaneously, and report back to Meeting for Business with all major decision-making issues. We envision that there may be occasions for specially called gatherings for the Meeting community as a whole, for example, to introduce a fundraising consultant and capital campaign strategies, or to share design drawings and cost estimates once they are developed.2) Appoint a Project Committee. The purpose of this committee will be to oversee the repair and remodeling work on the Meetinghouse. One of the committee's first tasks will be to consult with architects and contractors about design, scope, costs and projects management.
At the January 2001 Business Meeting Friends approved the following declaration and commitment:
University Friends Meetinghouse was built in 1962. At that time the building and property cost $283,000 and Meeting had 200 members. The buildings cost was substantially paid for by the sale of our previous Meetinghouse property to the University of Washington. Since then, our building has changed very little, but its importance in our lives and in the community at large has continued to grow. We have taken care of some essential maintenance such as periodic painting and a new roof, but from top to bottom maintenance of the Meetinghouse has not kept pace with our and others heavy use of the building. Our annual maintenance budget is not adequate to keep up with repairs, and the configuration of space inside and out ill serves our expanded needs and those of our tenants and the wider community. Therefore, University Friends Meeting commit ourselves to a major capital fundraising campaign to repair, remodel and upgrade our Meetinghouse. It is our intention to raise at least $500,000 over the course of three years to enable us to undertake some or all of the projects in the following list. In doing this work we will be taking care of the physical structure of the Meetinghouse.
