The Asian and Pacific Islander communities encompass a diversity of cultures speaking almost 30 languages, presenting APAC with a major organizing challenge. These communities represent the largest non-Caucasian racial group on Seattle/King County. According to the 1990 census, Asians and Pacific Islanders in Seattle/King County increased from 62,459 to 118,784 between 1980 and 1990, which is an increase of 90.2%. (API population totals including the neighboring Pierce, Kitsap and Snohomish Counties are approximately 170,000). The Seattle population increased by 91.7%. The Southeast Asian population (primarily Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong and Thai) increased by 40,000 while the Filipino and Korean population double in the past decade.
