FESTIVAL CONCERTS
2005 CASCADE EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL
~ each concert will feature a special baroque dance presentation ~

Monday, August at 22 at 7:30 pm -- Grunewald Guild
The Goldberg Variations

Bach's Goldberg Variations for solo harpsichord is one of the most monumental of all keyboard works. According to Johann Nikolaus Forkel, the "Aria with Diverse Variations", as Bach titled it, was written for the prodigious young harpsichordist Johann Theophilus Goldberg, who studied with Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and later with Johann Sebastian, in order that he might offer some cheerful solace to Count Keyserlingk, the Russian ambassador appointed by Catherine the Great to the court of Dresden, during his frequent sleepless nights. Keyboardist Hans-Jürgen Schnoor, formerly cantor and organist at the St. Jakobi Church in Lübeck, teaches at the Lübeck Conservatory of Music and has performed the maginficent Goldberg Variations over 100 times. Please see 2002 Washington Post review.

Tuesday, August 23 at 7:30 pm -- Sleeping Lady Chapel Theatre
Cristofori in Dresden and Florence

Don't miss the Northwest premiere of Cristofori's revolutionary invention- the piano! - whose exceptional qualities will be revealed in the context of works by Heinichen, Zelenka, Froberger, Veracini - all composers associated with Cristofori's Florence ... and Dresden, where Antonio Lotti is said to have had a Cristofori piano from 1717 to 1719 which Bach may have experienced. This program is sponsored in part by Sleeping Lady Mountain Retreat.

Thursday, August 25 at 7:30 pm -- Canyon Wren Recital Hall
Abendmusik in Hamburg

Special guest viola da gambist Margriet Tindemans. Telemann and CPE Bach alone give resonance aplenty to Hamburg as an important musical center. Already during the previous century in 1660, organist Matthias Weckmann and music director Christian(?) Bernhard, both students of Schutz, founded the Collegium Musicum or Abendmusik in the refectory at the Jacobikirche, Hamburg's cathedral, featuring contemporary music of the time. Telemann wrote several unusual works for flute and two viola da gambas.

Friday, August 26 at 7:30 pm -- Canyon Wren Recital Hall
Johann Sebastian Bach and the Fortepiano

A musical composition was expected to assume different characteristics when performed by different musicians or with different instrumentation. What a new dimension to Bach's universe of expressivity the Cristofori piano affords! Hear Bach's Chromatic fantasy & Fugue, the Musical Offering Trio Sonata, and solo sonatas and chamber music.

Saturday, August 27 at 7:30 pm -- Canyon Wren Recital Hall
Festive Baroque Concerti

With the assistance of baroque violinist Alicia Yang and baroque violist Stephen Creswell, Festival artists will perform a Heinichen flute and oboe concerto, J.S. Bach's B Minor Suite, a CPE Bach keyboard concerto on the Cristofori, and an unpublished Quantz flute concerto from the Library of Congress.

Sunday, August 28 at 2:00 pm -- Grunewald Guild
