Next Meeting:  LINUX: Getting Connected

Meeting Overview:

Join us in kicking off the 1999-2000 year with a special presentation on the operating system that is taking the Information Technology industry by storm! Our guest speaker is David Smead, Webmaster at AmplePower in Seattle. Mr. Smead has more than thirty years of experience in engineering and programming, as well as being co-founder of AmplePower, which provides power systems for boats, RV's and remote sites. He is responsible for using microcomputer hardware and software to effectively manage battery life. AmplePower has been using Linux as their primary operating system for several years and has yet to experience a crash.

Mr. Smead will be covering the following topics:

  • What is Linux and why is it becoming so popular?
  • Getting your first Linux system operating and on-line: why is it so difficult?
  • Why Linux will continue to grow and why IT managers should be looking at software with non-proprietary formats.
  • Essential URLs to get connected to the Linux community
  • The best books to get you started
  • The Apache Web Server, firewalls, gateways and Samba.

If you are in the IT field, you can't afford to miss this program!
