Translators
are important members of the Community Empowerment Team.
|
..
| Most of the training
documents were written originally in English. |
. |
They are useful, however, wherever
there are people who have low incomes and little power. |
..
|
That means in many communities where
different languages are understood.
|
..
| If you can donate some
time and energy to translating even one document, you will be contributing
to the war against poverty. |
....... |
Every translator on this site is
a member of the Community Empowerment Team. |
..
| As a team member you
are entitled to put up a profile page on the site, and also your
CV or résumé. |
. |
Simply send me a couple photos and
some text, and I will work up a profile page until you are happy with it. |
..
| If you intend to become
a professional translator of web pages, it is very useful to learn how
to use Cat’s Cradle. |
. |
That is a programme, free on the
Internet, which allows you to put a document in and then translate to your
language of choice. |
..
| What is nice about it
is that it includes the alternate text behind graphics, as well as head
text, which is on all web pages but not shown on the screen. |
. |
If you want to get a free copy of
CatsCradle, and some guidelines on using it, please look at the Useful
Links page. |
..
| You may wish to work
with somebody. Perhaps one of you has the time and interest to translate,
but not computer or access to the Internet. |
. |
The other might not have as
much time, but has Internet access and can forward the translations to
be installed on the site. |
..

..
| Although there is no
money available to pay you for translating, there are several advantages
to joining our team. |
. |
You may devise your own
profile and send some text for it so as to enhance your presence. |
..
| A few of our volunteer
translators got jobs through having their CVs on the site, and certainly
got good recommendations from u for prospective jobs. |
. |
Also, your work with us can be put
on your CV, which is especially good when you are starting a career, and
need to demonstrate experience. |
..
| If you are
translating into a new language not already on the site, then it is important
to include the utility phrases. |
. |
These are words such as the name
of the language in its own script, the translation for “Community Empowerment,”
and phrases you see at the bottom of every page, such as “Bottom of Page,”
“Translated by,” Updated:” and so on. |
..
| For many of these I will
create graphics text files to use on the page. |
. |
Once they have been done, I will
simply copy them onto new pages with that same language. |
..
| As
an NGO, our budget is zero. Your contributions are much appreciated
and you will be helping your people. |
. |
When you
translate even a single document you become a member of our NGO. See the
FAQ
file. |
..
|
Since members of CEC are located all
around the world, we have some mechanisms for getting to know each other.
One is a pair of discussion groups on Yahoo. The other is Facebook.
In both of these we encouarage you to introduce yourself to all other members,
and to get to know was many others as you can. See Useful
Links
|
..
|
Most importantly, you will be working
with a team to effectively fight the global war against poverty.
