HISTORY OF KENMORE FOR KIDS ... II
BEFORE IT WAS KENMORE ...
The first "settlers" in the Kenmore area were the Native Americans of the Puget Sound country who inhabited its forests and lake shore. These Native Americans named the water we now call Lake Washington "Sta tabeb", which meant "lots of people talking".
Abundant timber
lured the first white settlers to this area ... and with the new settlers,
the Kenmore we know today began.
WHO FIRST OWNED THE LAND?
Philo Remington originally owned the land where the "hub" of Kenmore is now located. In 1880, he sold the land to Watson C. Squire.
In 1889, shortly
after the big Seattle fire occurred, John McMaster came to Seattle.
In 1905, he moved
to the Kenmore area, and from Mr Squire he leased the land on which he
built his shingle mill.
HOW DID KENMORE GET ITS NAME?
It was John McMaster,
who had a distinctive Scottish accent, and his wife Annie,
who called the
area Kenmore. They had met and married in Kenmore, Ontario, Canada
which in turn
was named after Kenmore, Scotland. Much of Kenmore, Scotland is
geographically
like our Kenmore with a big lake and mountains around it.
