Kenmore History Timeline


1870 - Philo Remington owns Kenmore lands.

1880 - Watson C. Squire purchases Kenmore lands.

1887 - Railroad completed from Seattle to Bothell.

1889 - John McMaster moves from Kenmore, Ontario (named after Kenmore, Scotland) to Seattle.

1903 - Kenmore School District established.

1901 - John McMaster moves to Kenmore area and gives it its name. He leases land from Watson C. Squire on which he builds a shingle mill.

1913 - Brick road is built between Lake Forest Park and Bothell.

1916 - December/January, Lake Washington freezes; people ice skate from Montlake Bridge to Kenmore.

1916 - Bothell and Kenmore schools merge.

1917 - Lake Washington is lowered nine feet for ship canal.

1917 - First Kenmore bridge built.

1920 - School District purchases first school bus.

1920 - State Flower Nursery is established (now known as Kenmore Park, where rhododendrons are featured).

1921 - Inglewood Country Club opens.

1925 - Inglewood Country Club destroyed by fire.

1930 - John McMaster dies.

1931 - St Edwards Seminary is built.

1942 - Kenmore Fire Department begins.

1946 - Munro Air Harbor (Kenmore Air Harbor) established.

1952 - Residents begin Water District # 79 service.

1954 - Kenmore voters defeat an incorporation plan.

1959 - Northshore School District established.

1961 - Kenmore Village opens.

1976 - St Edwards Seminary closes.

1978 - St Edwards becomes a State Park.

1984 - "Missing Link" in Burke-Gilman trail is completed (former rail line).

1995 - Kenmore Incorporation Committee is formed.

1998 - City of Kenmore is incorporated on August 31.

1998 - Kenmore Heritage Society is formed.

Five Northshore Schools are within Kenmore's boundaries:

Kenmore Elementary - 1955

Arrowhead Elementary - 1957

Kenmore Junior High - 1960

Moorlands Elementary - 1963

Inglemoor High - 1965

Nearby is Lockwood Elementary,  just north of Kenmore's city limit, and Thoreau Elementary, just south of Kenmore.
