Squire Park Community Council is part of your community representation in city government; it is one of about a dozen community councils comprising the Central Area District Council. Squire Park’s boundaries are East Jackson Street on the south, 12th Avenue on the west, East Union Street on the north, and 23rd Avenue on the east. There are about 3,500 households in the Squire Park area. The community council was formed in the early 1980s, incorporating in January 1988 as a nonprofit association in the state of Washington. Over the years, the council has held its meetings in various locations, including Langston Hughes Cultural Center, CAMP Firehouse, and Providence Medical Center.

Squire Park Community Council’s purposes are: to enhance the quality of life, preserve the residential character, and maintain diversity and political pluralism of the neighborhood; to combat community deterioration and secure adequate housing; to encourage citizen participation in housing and community improvements; and to disseminate information concerning the community council. Squire Park Community Council publishes a quarterly 6- to 8-page newsletter that is hand-distributed to as many households as possible; once a year, the newsletter is mailed to all residents. The newsletter is supported by donations from members and advertising from neighborhood businesses.

All residents in the Squire Park neighborhood are encouraged to become members in the community council (see Membership Information). Members elect a seven- to nine-person Board of Directors at the January meeting of each year; board members serve two-year terms. The Board of Directors elects four officers to serve for one year; current officers are: John Jeannot, president; Andre Helmstetter, vice president; Heather Morgan and Jan Munger, jointly serving as secretary; Rob Humble, treasurer. Membership meetings are held quarterly, and board meetings are held monthly. All meetings are open to all members of the council. For dates and locations of upcoming SPCC meetings, see Membership Information.
